Italdesign’s Quintessenza is a crazy pickup truck coupe

Italdesign’s futuristic truck concept offers a cool 4-motor setup with an incredible 2,145 horsepower

Italdesign's Quintessenza is a crazy pickup truck with more horsepower than the F1 Grid
  • Italdesign’s Quintessenza concept now features four electric motors delivering an astonishing 2,145 horsepower.
  • The futuristic electric car’s rear seats flip up to reveal a hidden, open truck bed area.
  • The company also announced it would spend $20 million to set up a headquarters in Michigan and work with U.S. automakers to develop electric vehicle technology.

The announcements at CES this year were a little crazy, and the Italdesign Quintessenza hit the spot. While its exterior design remains unchanged from what we saw last year, it features new Elaphe electric motor technology. This means it now has an electric motor on each wheel, which brings a number of benefits to future truck concepts.

Elaphe has touted a motor technology called Sonic 1 that can deliver up to 255 kW (341 hp) of peak power for short periods of time. It delivers a continuous 200 kW (268 hp) to each wheel. Italdesign says the upgraded motor Elaphe made for the Quintessenza is even more powerful.

Italdesign’s Quintessenza Looks Like A Subaru Brat From The Future

According to the Italian company, the Quintessenza has a combined power of up to 1,600 kW (2,145 hp). Talk about overkill. Most importantly, the truck concept features a 2+2 design with rear seats that flip forward and back.

In the rear position, rear passengers can look out from the open truck bed area. Basically, it’s a cooler version of the Subaru Brat. Quad-motor technology isn’t the only big news from Italdesign. The company also opened a new headquarters near Detroit and plans to spend about $20 million.

Specifically, the brand will open a location in Bloomfield, Michigan. It is expected to employ 24 people. “The United States plays a key role in our global strategy: partnering with major automakers to offer the broadest range of services on the market today,” said Italdesign Global CEO Antonio Casu.

“From styling and engineering to prototyping, testing and validation, and complete vehicle development…. Who else offers such a wide range of services? Our nearly six decades of expertise in the automotive industry is achieved through innovative solutions and proven The right partner with proven capabilities to support our customers in the U.S. We are ready to make a difference.”

It’s unclear exactly what, if anything, the fifth edition of the concert will bring. As a concept, it certainly won’t make it to production, even with these new motors. That said, some of the design cues we see here could be on the way in the near future.
