The drumbeat hearings should never have escalated to this level

NTIA comments following the outcome of the Drumsheds licensing hearing, which saw Enfield Council approve Drumsheds, one of London’s leading large event spaces, to continue operating at full capacity.

Michael Kill, chief executive of the Nighttime Industry Association, said:

“This hearing should not have escalated to such a contentious level. Targeting specific art forms risks perpetuating discrimination against cultural spaces and their communities. The continued operation of Drumsheds once again demonstrates its important role as a cornerstone of London’s nightlife – A space where music, culture and community come together. The council’s balanced regulatory approach sets a positive precedent, enabling cultural venues to thrive responsibly while promoting community engagement, supporting the local economy and maintaining a safe, secure environment for all. An inclusive environment.”

“The Enfield Licensing Subcommittee’s decision to allow the Drumsheds to reopen, with the additional safety measures in place, is a major win for public safety and for one of London’s most iconic cultural venues. The Drumsheds has always shown a strong commitment to safety and welfare This commitment has secured its reputation as an outstanding operator in London and perhaps even a global leader in guest service and safety standards.”

“Businesses in the night-time economy are committed to creating a safe and secure environment where people can enjoy the night out responsibly. Operators go to great lengths to minimize risks, investing heavily in education and awareness campaigns to educate guests about potential dangers. However, it is important to realize that the venue itself cannot be compared with individual choice. While venues work tirelessly and invest heavily to ensure safety, personal responsibility remains a key factor in protecting the wellbeing of all by continuing to develop and strengthen harm reduction strategies through education and awareness. Empowering individuals to make better, more informed decisions.

“This outcome highlights the importance of fair, evidence-based regulation that supports cultural venues while prioritizing public safety. Overly restrictive measures – such as those recommended by the Metropolitan Police at the hearing – could undermine Trust and collaboration between venues, authorities and the communities they serve. Venues like Drumsheds embody professionalism and provide a safe, well-managed environment while promoting trust and collaboration among stakeholders.”
