The top five best-selling cars of 2024

The final data for new car sales in 2024 has been released, and a familiar group of models topped the list last year.

It’s not surprising that Toyota is on the list, nor is it surprising that three pickup trucks from well-known brands are on the list.

In fact, the only brand to fall out of the top five in terms of annual sales is the MG ZS small SUV, which recently received a comprehensive refresh.

Another family hauler has replaced the ZS, with Australian new car sales hitting a record high this year.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the five best-selling models this year. These are the vehicles with the most deliveries in 2024, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industry (FCAI).

Ford’s popular Ranger ute overtook the Toyota RAV4 to become the best-selling car in 2024, with 62,593 units delivered.

Ranger becomes the first Ford model since the EB and ED Falcon (1992/93) to achieve back-to-back annual sales wins, and The best performing utes of 2024 car expert Rating.

Aside from the introduction of a new off-road Tremor variant, the Ranger will undergo few changes through 2024. It still offers a choice of three powertrains – a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 and a 3.0-liter twin-turbo petrol V6. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version will join the lineup in 2025.

Pricing ranges from $36,880 before on-road costs for the base single cab, to $90,440 before on-road costs for the Raptor high-performance flagship model.

Toyota RAV4

Like the Ranger to Ford, the RAV4 has been a sales darling for Toyota for years, including in 2024 when it surpassed the HiLux to become the Japanese brand’s best-selling model for the first time. The Japanese manufacturer delivered 58,718 RAV4s last year, a 98.2% increase from the previous year.

The RAV4 range is now powered exclusively by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine paired with a CVT transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive.

Toyota claims an output of 160kW for the front-wheel drive version and 163kW for the all-wheel drive version, with both producing 221Nm. Fuel consumption ranges from 4.7L/100km to 4.8L/100km.

All models receive a five-star ANCAP safety rating and come with Toyota’s five-year, unlimited kilometer warranty.

While entry price before on-road costs is $42,260, our highest-scoring model last year was the range-topping Hybrid Edge, with a Jack Quick rating of 8.3/10.

Toyota Hilux

Rounding out the podium was the Toyota HiLux, further demonstrating Australia’s love of Pitt cars. No fewer than 53,499 HiLux vehicles were delivered in 2024, down on sales in 2023 when the Ranger broke its seven-year run as Australia’s most popular car.

A total of 29 HiLux models are available, ranging from the basic single-cab WorkMate manual to the flagship GR Sport double-cab.

There are four powertrain options available in the lineup. Entry-level WorkMate versions of the ute are powered by a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine or a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, while the HiLux SR, SR5 and GR Sport are powered by a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine. The V-Active mild hybrid system adds an electric motor generator, 48V battery and DC/DC converter to the 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine.

As you’d expect considering how extensive the HiLux range is, pricing also varies widely. At the bottom of the range, the base WorkMate costs $26,475 before on-road costs, while the top-spec GR Sport will set you back almost $75,000 before on-road costs.

Tested some variations car expert Of the 2024 team, but the highest rated was the SR5 with V-Active technology, with tester Jack Quick scoring a 7.7/10.

Isuzu D-Max

Isuzu’s D-Max is the third best-selling car in the segment and the fourth most popular (30,194 units delivered), behind Toyota and Ford models.

The Isuzu D-Max offers a choice of two four-cylinder turbodiesel engines: a 1.9-litre engine with 110kW of power and 350Nm of torque; and a 3.0-litre engine with 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

It also comes in 25 different variants, ranging from a 4×2 single cab for the workplace to a 4×4 dual cab lifestyle model. The range-topping model is the new D-Max Blade, a locally developed off-road ute sub-type.

All D-Max models come with a six-year, 150,000km warranty, with logbook maintenance required every 12 months or 15,000km.

Our choice among the 2024 test models was the LS-U+, which offers some extra interior conveniences compared to the rest of the range and is the more powerful of the two powertrains on offer. Max Davies scored 8.1/10 in September Tests.

Mitsubishi Outlander

Mitsubishi Outlander ranked fifth in the sales rankings last year, with 27,613 units delivered.

The Outlander is a popular choice in the mid-size SUV segment and is available with petrol or plug-in hybrid power, although the latter is more expensive.

The entry-level model comes with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 135 kW of power and 244 Nm of torque, while the 2.4-litre four-cylinder PHEV boosts output to 185 kW and 450 Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels or all four wheels via a CVT transmission.

Fuel consumption ranges from 1.5 l/100 km (PHEV) to 8.1 l/100 km (petrol), depending on the model.

Prices start at $37,740 (excluding on-road costs) for the base five-seat ES, and top out at $73,790 (excluding on-road costs) for the GSR PHEV.
