Are you talking about range anxiety? VW ID.7 585 miles in one trip

The unmodified ID.7 Pro S sedan exceeded the official WLTP range figure of 441 miles during controlled testing at Porsche’s Nardo test facility

Are you talking about range anxiety? VW ID.7 can travel 585 miles on a single charge
  • In official testing by Volkswagen, a pure electric Volkswagen ID.7 electric sedan can travel 585 miles on a single charge.
  • The unmodified fastback uses a regular 86 kWh battery, but that’s a third higher than the official range figure.
  • Engineers recorded an extremely low efficiency of just 9.2 kWh/100 km or 6.7 miles per kWh for the ID.7.

If you’ve ever taken a long trip in an electric car on unfamiliar roads, you know that range anxiety is very real. The official range of 350 miles (563 kilometers) that salespeople promise you is usually 270 miles (435 kilometers) in reality, and much less in winter. But in a recent test, the Volkswagen ID.7’s range not only matched the 350-mile range of a gasoline car, but also came close to the range of a diesel car.

During a controlled event at Porsche’s Nardo test facility in southern Italy, the ID.7 Pro S was able to travel 585 miles (941 kilometers) on a single charge. That’s a third more than the WLTP’s claimed range of 441 miles (709 kilometers), which is already impressive by EV standards, although WLTP’s figures are very optimistic.

Of course, if you give any electric car a huge battery, you can extract crazy numbers from any electric car, strip out the interior to save weight, and add special tires and enhance aerodynamics. But the ID.7 on test was completely standard, with a battery capacity of 86 kWh, and anyway the slippery sedan had a drag coefficient of just 0.23 Cd.

The ID.7 Pro S version is equipped with a single 282 hp (286 PS / 210 kW) electric motor driving the rear wheels. It accelerates from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h), although VW drivers were unable to achieve efficiency figures in tests of electric cars. will take advantage of these features. 9.2 kWh/100km (6.9 miles/kWh or 149 Wh/mile). Ambient temperature range is 41-59 F (5-15 C).

Can the ID.7, the electric car sweeping the continent, convert diesel enthusiasts to electric vehicles? Maybe not. Volkswagen used Nardo’s low-speed ring, which runs right inside the famous 7.8-mile (12.5-kilometer) high-speed bowl, allowing the automaker to simulate real-world traffic conditions. The ID.7 averages just 18 mph (29 km/h), which VW says reflects typical peak-hour speeds in European cities.

So this test is better viewed as showing that you can commute for weeks with the ID.7 without needing to be near a charger, rather than proving that you can drive from San Francisco to Tijuana at highway speeds without needing to charge along the road. But it’s still impressive.
