New Jersey says Ford backup camera recall failed

New Jersey class action lawsuit alleges 360-degree camera system recall failed, 3 of them.

— Ford’s backup camera recall program is said to have failed and would apply to customers who bought Ford and Lincoln vehicles in New Jersey.

According to the class action lawsuit, the 360-degree camera system was defective and frequently malfunctioned.

These defects cause the backup camera to malfunction, with the image appearing blue, black or blank.

The Ford class action lawsuit includes:

“Everyone who purchased or leased one or more of the following vehicles equipped with a 360-degree camera system in New Jersey during the applicable restricted period: a 2020-2023 Ford Explorer, a 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator, and/or a 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair.”

Ford allegedly knew or should have known about the flaws in the 360-degree camera systems before the vehicles were first advertised.

The backup camera class action lawsuit, filed by Gabriel Shiff and Robert Sonsini, alleges that the 360-degree camera recall failed to address the problem.

Ford backup camera recall

In September 2021, Ford announced a recall of the 360-degree rearview cameras on Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and Lincoln Corsair vehicles equipped with a blue backup camera screen.

The 360-degree recall didn’t go over well, as customers said the camera system kept malfunctioning, leaving drivers with only a blue display.

In January 2023, Ford announced another recall of the backup camera on the same model as customers continued to complain about blue screens on the camera screens on vehicles that had supposedly been repaired.

But as of March 21, 2023, 250 warranty claims have been submitted for black and blue 360-degree camera screens on Ford and Lincoln vehicles that have been repaired during the recall.

That led Ford and Lincoln to announce a third recall for backup cameras, with engineers believing a software error caused the displays to fail.

Ford said it is “possible” to restore the backup camera image by shifting the vehicle into park, turning it off and restarting it.

“But this cumbersome process is not always possible and can indeed increase the risk of a collision or injury, for example when a car is backing into a busy street or pedestrian zone with heavy traffic.” Ford 360-degree camera lawsuit

The Ford and Lincoln class action lawsuit was filed in New Jersey but transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan: Shiff et al. v. Ford Motor Co..

The plaintiffs are represented by DeNittis Osefchen Prince, PC and Criden & Love, PA
