GM CEO Mark Reuss pledges investment in internal combustion vehicles amid shift to electric vehicles
  • GM President Mark Reuss said the company will continue to invest in combustion technology as it transitions to electric power.
  • The automaker said its manufacturing setup is flexible enough to accommodate changes in consumer demand between ICEs and EVs.
  • GM recently delayed the launch of its Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV trucks because the electric vehicle market has not matured as expected.

GM President Mark Reuss said GM will continue to invest in combustion technology in the coming years as the automaker and the industry transition to electric power.

At the CAR Management Briefing Seminar, Reuss updated attendees on GM’s flexible production strategy, which helps protect it from changes in customer demand, and reiterated his commitment to ICE. GM has dedicated electric and internal combustion engine plants, as well as plants that build both types of vehicles.

“You have to keep investing in ICE,” Automotive News “You’ll see all of those things happening in parallel with our launch of electric vehicles,” Reuss said, referring to the launch of new or improved internal combustion models such as the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox. “Now, that’s a big execution risk, but I would say we know how to do it very well as long as the timing is right with the supply base.”

GM needs to remain nimble to adapt to an electric vehicle market that has yet to take off as many automakers predicted, a fact that led to GM delaying the launch of the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV trucks. CEO Mary Barra acknowledged last month that GM will not meet its goal of producing 1 million electric vehicles by the end of 2025 because of slowing demand for electric vehicles.

“It’s growing a little bit slower, but not no “The electric vehicle market is growing,” Reuss said of the electric vehicle market, “and the infrastructure isn’t coming as fast as everyone would like, but it’s coming.”

Although GM has temporarily stopped making electric trucks, it remains committed to replacing the affordable Bolt EV, which was discontinued last year. The new version will be launched in 2025 and will switch to GM’s more modern Ultium platform, with production moving from the Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan, where the delayed EV truck was originally scheduled to be built, to the automaker’s production facility in Kansas.
