- The rear spoiler has become a signature design element on many cars.
- Here are a few of our all-time favorite production spoilers.
- The “best” rear spoiler is subjective and comes down to personal taste.
Today, automakers and designers sometimes add elements to cars that have nothing to do with performance. Fake grilles, fake vents, and fake exhaust pipes abound. Yet decades ago, many people considered cool things to exist on high-performance cars because they were functionally essential (in most cases).
var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:()}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){ adpushup.triggerAd(“4d84e4c9 -9937-4f84-82c0-c94544ee6f2a”); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd(“6a782b01-facb-45f3-a88f-ddf1b1f97657”); } });
Rear spoilers are just one of those elements that still have a place in modern performance cars. The question is which rear spoiler looks the best? We asked the Carscoops staff the same question, and the answers were varied. Our featured Toyota Supra is a great example, a car that was famous in part for its wild-looking (at the time) spoiler.

It’s also a good place to start, because this QOTD isn’t just about the biggest or craziest spoiler ever. That would only concern cars like the Plymouth Superbird or the Koenigsegg One:1. Instead, we’re asking about the best-looking spoiler. It’s an integral part of the design, and looking good is almost as important as the rest of the car.
window._taboola = window._taboola || (); _taboola.push({ mode: ‘thumbnails-a-mid’, container: ‘taboola-mid-article’, placement: ‘Mid Article’, target_type: ‘mix’ } );
window._taboola = window._taboola || (); _taboola.push({ mode: ‘thumbnails-oc-2×1’, container: ‘taboola-mid-article-thumbnails-organic’, placement: ‘Article mid thumbnail organic’, target_type: ‘mix’ });
Porsche has long dominated the segment somewhat with its ducktail spoilers that feature on several 911s. They take an already well-known silhouette and elevate it to even greater heights. Before Subaru killed off the STI, it was also easily distinguishable by its massive rear spoiler.
Some classic cars deserve some love, too. The Ferrari F40’s rear wing is mostly what people ask of it, but it’s clearly iconic and an integral part of the styling. The Ford Escort RS Cosworth and its whale tail also got some love in our chat. The Lamborghini Countach and its rear wing, which some say is actually bad for aerodynamics, also got some love.
But if we’re talking about older cars, I’d give a big thumbs up to the RUF CTR2 Sport. Am I biased because I drove it in Gran Turismo for a few years? Of course. Does it still look wild and stunning? Yes. What do you think is the best-looking production rear spoiler of all time? Let us know in the comments below!
