Volvo’s ICE flagship SUV to be sold alongside the all-electric EX90
- Volvo will launch a “substantially revised” XC90 on September 4.
- The new XC90 will feature a hybrid powertrain and will be launched alongside the all-electric EX90.
- Volvo said that in addition to the SUV flagship model, there may be “one or two surprises” at the launch conference.
Slowing growth in electric vehicles has forced many automakers to reconsider whether to stop making internal combustion engine cars. Volvo, for example, is launching a “new generation” XC90 as a hybrid alternative to the similarly sized all-electric EX90.
The Swedish automaker has revealed that a “substantially revised” XC90 will be unveiled on “90/90 Day” on September 4 of this year. That means it will receive an extensive facelift rather than a complete redesign. Volvo may take a similar approach with other older combustion models to keep them relevant until the brand transitions to all-electric models by 2030.

The second-generation Volvo XC90 debuted in 2014 and received a minor facelift in 2019. The upcoming 2025 model is expected to feature a completely redesigned exterior and a refreshed interior, incorporating styling elements from its EV sibling, the EX90. The large SUV is likely to offer mechanical upgrades, a greater focus on electrification, and the latest safety technology.
The official teaser shows the new XC90’s hood, which looks more sculpted than the EX90’s. The headlights, while slightly different, still feature Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer LED graphics. Patent drawings from 2022 hint at an EX90-style SUV, possibly the new XC90, though that’s unconfirmed at this point.
The all-electric EX90 debuted in November 2022, but a software bug caused delays and production didn’t start until June 2024. Volvo doesn’t believe the new hybrid XC90 will cannibalize EX90 sales because the models appeal to a different audience. It’s not clear if the new XC90 will be offered in a mild-hybrid version, or if the Geely-owned brand will opt for a PHEV-only range.

In addition to the debut, Volvo promises that the 90/90 Days livestream will “mark a significant moment in the EX90’s launch.” The automaker also said there “may be a surprise or two…”, leaving us curious about what’s to come. Hopefully, we’ll learn more before the big day on September 4.
