- Despite its low price, the Mona M03 offers advanced features such as semi-autonomous driving.
- There are two battery options to choose from, including 51.8 kWh and 62.2 kWh packs.
If you want to buy an innovative, affordable electric car, you may have to move to China, as the country has become a global hotbed for affordable electric vehicles. Xpeng Motors’ new Mona M03 is one example.

Unveiled in June as the new entry-level model in the Xpeng Motors family, pricing has now been announced, starting at an incredible 119,800 RMB, or $16,800 USD. That’s about $600 cheaper than the cheapest new car currently available in the US, the 2024 Nissan Versa.

At this affordable starting price, local buyers will be able to drive an electric car with the lowest drag coefficient. Power comes from a 51.8 kWh battery pack driving a 188 hp (140 kW) electric motor. Although the battery is small, the base model CTLC has a claimed range of 320 miles (515 km).

The Mona M03’s appeal isn’t just about range. All models come with Level 2 driver assistance technology, thanks to a pair of millimeter-wavelength radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and seven cameras.
The middle version of the Mona M03 series is priced at 129,800 yuan (about $18,200). It has a larger 62.2 kWh battery and a more powerful 215 horsepower (160 kW) motor for the front wheels. The larger battery allows its range to climb to 385 miles (620 kilometers). The top model of the series is the 580 Max model, which starts at 155,800 yuan or about $21,850 and has a range of 360 miles (580 kilometers).
Like many other electric cars on the market, the Mona M03’s cabin is fairly spartan, but well-equipped. For example, all models come with a large panoramic glass roof and an 18-speaker sound system. A big highlight in the center of the dashboard is a large Tesla-style screen, and like the Model 3 and Model Y, there is no traditional instrument cluster. However, for just 599 yuan ($84), a second screen can be added behind the steering wheel.
Xpeng Motors reportedly received more than 10,000 confirmed orders for the Mona M03 within 52 minutes of its launch in June, and orders are expected to grow rapidly as pricing is announced.
