A visionary calls for protecting our future » Exhibit City News

go through Kim Kelley voices Mark Stross

In a world where digital devices and platforms dominate every aspect of life, technology has brought unprecedented convenience, innovation and opportunity. However, as the digital age advances, so do its dangers. American technologist and tech industry leader Mark Stross is raising awareness of these risks. His mission? Make sure technology serves humanity, not the other way around.

As ANC’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for more than 20 years, Stross has been at the forefront of digital innovation, developing transformative technology for some of the world’s most famous venues, including stadiums, train stations and the World Trade Center. His book Killer Technologies and the Drive to Save Humanity is a wake-up call, urging readers to understand the hidden costs of the digital age and offering solutions to help take back control of their digital lives.

The hidden costs of digital addiction

Today, people spend more time online than ever before. From social media to streaming services, smartphones have become central to our daily lives. However, Stross emphasized that this convenience comes at a high price. “We are witnessing an epidemic of digital addiction,” he said. “People are glued to their screens and don’t realize how sophisticated technology companies are using to keep them hooked.”

This addiction not only affects adults, but children are increasingly susceptible as well. “Our children are growing up in a world where self-worth is measured in terms of likes and attention,” Stross explains. “They constantly compare themselves to others, which seriously affects their mental health.” Stross emphasized that protecting the innocence of children in the digital space is crucial and stronger measures need to be taken to ensure they are protected.

Call for a digital bill of rights

One of Stross’s most urgent recommendations is a digital bill of rights. Stross envisions it as a way for individuals to take control of their data. It would enforce clear ownership, transparency and consent guidelines, holding tech companies accountable for how they use personal information. “We have a right to know what happens to our data, and we should have the ability to delete it at any time,” Stross asserted. “If we can create a transparent ledger for cryptocurrencies, why can’t we do the same for our personal data?”

This vision is not only about protecting privacy, but also about safeguarding human dignity in the digital age. “We need to move from user agreements to human agreements,” he said. “Platforms have to start respecting us as people, not products.”

The future of artificial intelligence and automation

While Killer Tech focuses on current challenges, Stross also looks to the future, specifically how artificial intelligence (AI) will reshape industries and our lives. While artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize various fields, Stross warned that it must be handled responsibly.

“Artificial intelligence will replace jobs. It’s inevitable,” Stross said. “But the question is: Are we ready for this shift?” In his book, Stross outlines the steps individuals and businesses must take to prepare for automation. He emphasized the need to re-equip and acquire new skills to stay ahead in an AI-dominated world. But more importantly, Stross calls for ethical AI development. “AI should enhance humanity, not harm it. That means building safeguards and accountability from the start.”

call to action

At its core, Killer Technology and the Power to Save Humanity is a call to action. This book challenges readers to rethink their relationship with technology and take charge of their digital future. “We can no longer be passive consumers of technology,” Stross said. “We must demand better privacy protections, ethics and accountability from the companies that shape our digital world.”

Stross’ message is clear: While technology is here to stay, we have a responsibility to ensure that it serves humanity, not controls us. By raising awareness, having meaningful conversations, and advocating for change, we can create a safer and more ethical digital world for ourselves and future generations.
