- Amazon is reportedly developing glasses with augmented reality capabilities to help delivery drivers.
- The glasses could help delivery drivers navigate from their van to the correct door more efficiently.
- The online retail giant faces several major challenges, including privacy concerns going forward.
Amazon wants to help delivery drivers avoid obstacles on the way to their homes. In fact, the company thinks the solution might be a new set of smart glasses. If these glasses were worn on the faces of local Amazon delivery drivers, they could potentially “slow down” their delivery times.
There’s no doubt that Amazon’s success is largely due to its fast delivery times. The company has also weathered numerous accusations of brutality over its speedy delivery practices. Now, a new report claims that these smart glasses are a new idea from the brand to improve the delivery experience.

according to Reuterssmart glasses are currently in development. Amazon sees them as a tool that helps drivers get the fastest route from a delivery van to a customer’s doorstep. These include “providing left or right directions outside elevators and around obstacles such as gates or aggressive dogs.” I can’t imagine a scenario where I would check my smart glasses while trying to avoid an aggressive dog, But I’m not a delivery driver either.
Regardless, the report states that there may not be any progress in the development process, depending on how successful the testing is. Amazon responded to the report: “We are constantly innovating to create a safer and better delivery experience for drivers. Otherwise we would not comment on our product roadmap.”

No doubt Amazon drivers might welcome more detailed delivery instructions at times. Navigating complex building infrastructure, apartment complexes, etc. can be difficult. At the same time, there are some challenges if the technology is to work.

Amazon not only had to develop functional glasses to help drivers navigate its entire delivery network, but it also had to convince drivers to wear them. The glasses also need to fit those who already wear corrective lenses. Finally, Amazon may face regulatory and privacy concerns because this type of device could theoretically record drivers as they drive around the world.
