The Volkswagen Tayron L from China is essentially a 2025 Tiguan for North America
- The Volkswagen Tayron L released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is actually a preview of the US version of the Tiguan.
- The SUV is 133 mm (5.2 in) longer than the European Tiguan and has different styling.
- It has been confirmed that the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan will debut in North America later this year.
The all-new 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan will debut in the U.S. market by the end of the year, sporting a design that’s radically different from its European counterpart After numerous spy shots, we’ve got official photos of the China-spec Volkswagen Tayron L, which is expected to be identical to the U.S.-spec Tiguan — confusing, we know.
The compact SUV is planned to be produced by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture, and despite similar styling, the body panels are not identical to the recently launched European Tiguan. Instead, the Tayron L and the North American Tiguan adopt more design elements from the Volkswagen ID family, including the clamshell hood and full-width LEDs at both ends.

The R-Line trim enhances its sporting appeal with a beefy bumper with fake air vents, rich gloss black trim, and shinier 20-inch alloy wheels.
In terms of dimensions, the Chinese Volkswagen Tayron L is 4,684 mm (184.4 in) long, 1,854 mm (73 in) wide, 1,685 mm (66.3 in) tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,791 mm (109.9 in). The R-Line model is slightly longer at 4,695 mm (184.8 in) due to its unique bumper.
Overall, the Tayron L is 133 mm (5.2 in) longer than the EU-spec Tiguan, but 51 mm (2 in) shorter than the Chinese-market Tiguan L. All of the aforementioned SUVs ride on the latest MQB Evo architecture, which is in line with most of the Volkswagen Group’s ICE-powered models, including the new Passat.

According to a document from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Volkswagen Tayron L will be offered in the local market with three turbocharged petrol engines. The entry-level 1.5-liter unit will have an output of 158 hp (118 kW / 160 PS), while the more powerful 2.0-liter unit will be available with either 184 hp (137 kW / 186 PS) or 217 hp (162 kW / 220 PS).
The US version of the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan is expected to be equipped with a more efficient mild-hybrid turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and may also be equipped with a plug-in hybrid model. In Europe, the Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid offers up to 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS) and a pure electric range of 62 miles (100 km), powered by a 19.7 kWh battery pack.
The new Tiguan is expected to make its official debut in North America in the coming months. Interestingly, there are rumors that the Tayron L may also come to the European market in the form of a seven-seat SUV, potentially replacing the Tiguan Allspace and surpassing the regular Tiguan.
