As an electric car, which gasoline car can definitely crush it?

While electric vehicles may not be for everyone, certain models can be significantly enhanced by incorporating this drivetrain

  • While electric vehicle sales may not be growing as much as manufacturers expect, they are still the future.
  • So we wanted to know which combustion-only model would benefit from adopting an all-electric drivetrain.

Nearly every segment of today’s automotive market has at least one all-electric model. However, a handful of models – and even entire brands – remain stubbornly reliant on internal combustion engines. Today, we’re flipping the script: Which of these holdouts would benefit the most from going all-electric?

Our main image is probably the best example of this. It’s not that Rolls-Royce owners were upset by the lack of horsepower ahead of the launch of the all-electric Specter, but the British company’s choice is an important one.

A calm, composed, quiet and powerful driving experience has always been the hallmark of the Rolls-Royce experience. The British brand has amplified exactly this by fitting the Specter with an electric drivetrain. Additionally, since the Specter doesn’t rely on lap times or extreme range estimates, the EV drivetrain is absolutely perfect for luxury and quietness without lacking in performance.

At the other end of the spectrum we find city cars like the Fiat 500e. Sure, people scoff at its 117 horsepower and 141-mile range, but models like the Chevrolet Trax and Mazda CX-30 could follow suit. Before you start typing “but Mazda did try the MX-30”, hear me out.

Cars like the MX-30 and 500e are a bit pricey for what they offer, but they’re also very specialized. Just like trucks and supercars have their own specialties, so do small electric city cars. For those who rarely plan road trips and only need to travel in dense urban areas, the all-electric Trax or CX-30 would be a good choice.

In fact, almost any city car priced under $35,000 can thrive as long as it offers fast charging and a well-appointed interior to justify its cost. For example, the all-electric Nissan Sentra or Mitsubishi Mirage could be a strong contender—assuming the right balance of price, range, and features.

However, these are just some ideas. Now it’s your turn. Which car on sale today would benefit most from ditching the internal combustion engine for an electric drivetrain? Let us know in the comments below!
