UK: Government launches consultations
in short Following the publication of the Employment Rights Bill on 10 October 2024, the Government has launched a consultation on strengthening statutory sick pay. As part of amendments to the Employment Rights Act, the consultation seeks views on the amount of statutory sick pay that employees earning below the current eligibility threshold should receive. Main points The Employment Rights Act provides for a new general right to statutory sick pay from the first day an employee becomes ill. Currently, eligible employees are entitled to statutory sick pay (SSP) of £116.75 per week for up to 28 weeks, but SSP usually only starts on the fourth consecutive day of illness.
