Kindoma: Bridging distance through shared family story time –
Kindoma: Using family story time to bridge distanceMore and more families are struggling with distance; in the U.S. alone, half of grandparents live more than 200 miles from their grandchildren. In this talk, we’ll summarize our field research into how families with young children are coping with distance, and how the technology they use is both helpful and inadequate. We’ll use the findings from this fieldwork to drive a multi-year quest to enable families to read books together at a distance. We’ll outline the design and evaluation of 3 research prototypes: Family Storytime (mobile device + physical book), Story Access (web), and People in Books (depth camera). The talk will conclude with a discussion of how we commercialized these ideas at Kindoma with the launch of the Kindoma Storytime app for iPad. Rapid Iteration of IoT – Tempo Automation
"Rapid iteration of IoT - Tempo Automation"(PDF slides)As the fastest-growing platforms shifted from desktop to mobile, mobile devices themselves began to gain traction, moving to a highly diverse array of devices that are carried, worn, and used in entirely new ways. New devices and ecosystems are emerging in entirely new forms. Because their impact often depends on the scale of use, device prototypers now need ways to rapidly mass-produce prototypes. In short, this means rapid iteration on the Internet of Things. Many fields already benefit from scalable, high-speed iteration—lean startups in business, agile development in software, and 3D printing in mechanical design. Tempo Automation has now developed a robot that brings this capability to electronics. Frankly, current options for manufacturing small quantities of circuit boards aren't appealing. Either you have to wait weeks to get your boards back from the fab, or you have to assemble multiple boards yourself, which can strain your fine motor skills. Tempo Automation aims to…

How to build a wireless network project in minutes
How to build a wireless network project in minutes using Pinocc.ioNovember 13, 2013 6:30 pm (Registration) describe:How to build a wireless network-enabled project in minutes using Pinocc.io - a complete ecosystem for building the Internet of Things. Connecting things in the physical world to the web used to be a daunting task, requiring knowledge of RF, low-power systems, embedded firmware, network stacks, and web and mobile development. Pinoccio is working to make this task as easy as possible, essentially providing an API for your hardware. Additionally, Pinoccio uses mesh networking, so it’s easy to set up a transparent, self-healing network whether you’re in an urban area or in the middle of the desert. Eric Jennings, Chief Technology Officer, Pinoccio Inc.Eric's background is in software, but his passion is open source hardware. He is a TechStars NYC Winter 2011 alumnus, has worked at tech startups in New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and holds a BS in Computer Science…

Will this be the year wearables take the giant leap beyond being just an add-on to smartphones and tablets? Broadcom predicts that the wearables market will grow tenfold by 2018. That growth is likely to be even more dramatic given the success of wearables on micro-funding platforms such as Kickstarter.com, where small, talented teams can bring products to market in a matter of months. Yet mass-market devices like smartwatches from Samsung and Sony seem to be arriving only quietly. Google Glass is still in exclusive testing. Meanwhile, products like fitness bands, collars for pets, rings…

Open Mobile Ecosystem – A Future Reality or Just Preso Slideware?Learn about Project Ara and get GigaOm Research's perspective (SVForum Digital Media SIG has now joined SVForum > Mobile Group) Please pre-register at: Open software. Open hardware. Open app market. These approaches have enabled the transformation of mobile products. With a modular app store approach, the creativity of the developer community has been unleashed – across mobile platforms and now across IoT and wearables. Now, this trend is hitting hardware. Millennials crave personalization; however, the mainstream mobile industry is increasingly emphasizing the tight integration of hardware, software, and services. Can an open source platform with modular software and hardware reshape the entire mobile ecosystem and bring billions of people online? Are these trends unstoppable? Linux "wins" in the server market, why not in the client market? On June 5, we invite industry participants involved in open source/open platform projects to ask them pressing questions, and invite you to participate in…
