Take a long-term view of potential customers – trade shows
Weekly Insight: Take a long-term view of prospects November 10, 2023 A common misconception among exhibitors is that trade show owners must become customers within 30 days (or some other random timeline) for their exhibit investment to be worthwhile. That's unrealistic! Depending on the cost of your product, your audience's decision-making timeline... or a myriad of other factors, conversion from prospect to customer can take anywhere from 6-18 months. So don't lose them in the process! The key is to develop a strategy for nurturing leads throughout the process. Don’t think of them as “prospects,” think of them as “future friends and clients” and let that guide your follow-up system. Wondering where to start? Let your goals be your guide – Trade Show Insights
When I ask exhibitors about their goals for a specific show, the most common answers are brand awareness/awareness or lead generation. While these are all legitimate reasons to exhibit, they are what I call “vague goals.” That's because there's nothing definite or measurable about them. So, if you have no way to measure your results, especially if someone in your company (sales manager, VP of marketing, or whoever) has to be convinced that a trade show is worth the investment, how do you prove that you're successful? But that’s a topic for another episode or blog post. Today, I want to help you use your goals as a north star to guide all of your trade show decisions: what your show should look like (what it should or shouldn’t include), how to promote it, what to give away, and even how to develop a follow-up strategy. For example… If your goal is to build brand awareness, you’ll want to create…

Your booth staff matters! – Trade Show Insights
Weekly Insight: Your Booth Staff Matters! January 5, 2024 Exhibitors often focus on how their booth will look and what creative attractions or giveaways they can offer, but forget to educate their booth staff on how to interact with attendees. You can’t skimp on educating your exhibitors! I was recently interviewed on this topic on the Event Marketing Redefined podcast. When you take the time to coach your booth staff before a show (just like athletes training before a big game), you'll see a huge improvement in the quality and quantity of leads you collect at the show. Reimagining Trade Show Sponsorship – Trade Show Insights
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “sponsorship”? The welcome reception...or the tote bags...or the countless banners hanging around the convention center? Of course, that's what most shows do. But you don’t want to be like most shows, right? It’s time to revamp your sponsorship menu with some standout options that benefit all participants (attendees and exhibitors) and increase the show’s bottom line. In this episode, MK Granados, brand activation and sponsorship strategist at Gen City Labs, explains how to: Uncover unique opportunities hidden in plain sight Leverage sponsorship to solve problems for attendees Show exhibitors that you care about their needs too Make your arrival experience unforgettable Related links: About MK Granados MK Granados MK Granados is the head of marketing at Gen City Labs, a creative technology studio that works with brands to create interactive experiences at events, pop-ups, briefing centers and more. What are you ignoring? – Trade Show Insights
Certain topics are getting a lot of attention today: staffing challenges, budgeting, sustainability, artificial intelligence. But often that’s all they are – buzzwords. So in this episode of Trade Show Insights, I invite one of my trade show friends to join me for a conversation that goes beyond the surface of these topics and what else is involved should be On everyone's radar. You see, over the years, Rich Vallaster and I have scheduled frequent touch base calls to analyze what is happening in the trade show industry, what is working, and what needs to change. Now is your chance to listen to our discussion: How staff shortages at all levels affect exhibitors What trade show managers can do to make life easier for new exhibitors Why trade shows need to reward exhibitor and visitor loyalty How there is a huge disconnect around the topic of sustainability When and how to use artificial intelligence tools Related links: About Rich Valast…
Don’t quit too quickly! – Trade Show Insights
I see this all the time...exhibitors checking out early on the last day of the show. Sometimes an empty stall will be left in person. (Not the impression you want to leave!) But more often, employees are physically present but mentally checked. I saw this again at a recent show. Of course, there was less traffic on the last day, but there were still plenty of engaged attendees exploring the aisles—even in the back of the hall—in the final afternoon! Even more impressive, a couple of small exhibitors in the far corner had a crowd huddled around their booths. Meanwhile, some neighbors' stalls are also empty. Obviously, there's traffic there. People are looking for their way to that aisle. So what's the difference? At each busy booth, staff stood and interacted with the audience. In the empty booths, staff were more interested in their cell phones or sitting around talking to each other. They no longer follow attendees. While this…
Is your marketing strategy internal or external? – Trade
Weekly Insight: Is your marketing strategy internal or external? March 22, 2024 Many marketing professionals and entrepreneurs get excited when they come up with clever marketing campaigns. The problem is, the message is often at odds with the target audience. (Trust me - I see it in showrooms all the time!) So instead of crafting a marketing message to please your CEO, manager, owner (or yourself)… focus on how your product or service makes your customer’s life or business better. Let them understand why your company is the best to help them overcome their challenges and move toward the light. I guarantee you will be richly rewarded! Hosting events that care for people and the planet – trade shows
Lifestyles have changed since the Great Pause, and endurance is a big part of that. While event attendees used to be willing to be booked from sunrise to sunset (and even beyond), that’s no longer the case. Savvy trade show organizers and exhibitors are learning to incorporate wellness into every aspect of their event—from overall scheduling to catering to in-booth activities and more. In this episode, wellness consultant David Stevens goes beyond wellness buzzwords and shares strategic ways to incorporate wellness into your activities: Focus on attendee experience Incorporate wellness elements into your booth Design after-get off work activities that won’t burn people out Learn what "healthy washing" is and how to avoid it Pace yourself and your team through the entire show Related links: About David Stevens David T. Sponsorship strategies that get results – trade shows
Recently, Al Mercuro invited me to contribute to his "Daily Industry Jargon" series on LinkedIn, and I shared a basic definition of sponsorship, as well as one of the key tips for exhibitors to consider: But there are so many more ideas for using sponsorships at trade shows! For starters, it’s important to know what your sponsorship goals are – what do you want to achieve? Understanding this will help you determine which sponsorship makes the most sense. For example, if you want to connect with attendees, it doesn't make much sense to spend money on tote bags with your logo. But sponsorships are often bland and simply create a sea of signs around the convention center. So why not keep things interesting? Here are some examples that go beyond logos to let you get creative: If you need more inspiration, here are some posts from the Trade Show Insights archives: What types of creative sponsorships have you seen or…
Create Engaging Experiences – Trade Show Insights
Simply designing an impressive exhibition display is no longer enough. Attention spans are short, and attendees want an experience that not only educates them about your product, but also keeps them engaged and having fun. At the same time, sponsoring a trade show opening reception or other official event can be beyond the budget of many companies. So what should creative exhibitors do? With decades of experience hosting memorable events, Wendy Porter shares her insider tips on: Why creating experiences beyond the showroom is more important than ever How to curate a unique experience for your ideal audience (with fun examples!) Why the way you transport them to the event sets the tone How to use in-booth activities to increase attendee dwell time What is "Alice's Story" and why it matters Related links: About Wendy Porter Wendy Porter Wendy is an experienced event strategist and industry thought leader who spent more than twenty years working in marketing and events for…
What Exhibitors Can Learn from Taylor Swift – Trade Show
Earlier this year, I attended a workshop on how to market like Taylor Swift, and let me tell you… what you can learn by studying this award-winning, stadium-packing music legend Lots of insights. Now, it really doesn't matter whether you know one of her songs (I'm only familiar with a few myself). We'll break down the strategies she uses to attract raving fans who can't wait for her next album to debut, and how to apply them to trade show marketing. Lesson 1: Know your buyer personas and speak their language. She figured out people's desires or dreams and made them happen. She gave them a sense of belonging and made everyone feel like she was speaking directly to them in their own language. This doesn’t mean speaking down to them—in fact, quite the opposite. That's why you'll find countless "Is it Taylor Swift or Shakespeare?" quizzes online. Do you know the specifics of who you’re marketing to? Do you…
Sponsorship Beyond Banners – Trade Show Insights
You know that feeling…you enter the convention center and there are sponsor banners everywhere! Banners on the floor…banners wrapped around the pillars…banners hanging from the ceiling… But do these sponsor banners really connect with attendees? I guess not! That’s why it’s important to look beyond banners and ads to create meaningful sponsorship opportunities. If you're wondering how to do this, here are some previous posts that may help! I know I've made some of my best customers and friends at trade shows. Maybe this is the first time I meet you! Creative Seating Ideas for IMEX 2024 – Trade Show Insights
Just because you plan to have a seating area in your booth, doesn’t mean your only option is a high-top table or couch in the break room! Check out these clever examples found on the IMEX show floor in Las Vegas: california A group of Adirondack chairs surround a low coffee table, capturing the laid-back beach vibe. (A great tip from my friend Rama Beerfas of Lev Promotions: Add branded or custom mats (like the orange and black mats in the photo) to reinforce your messaging. ) Visit Baltimore With a more urban community feel and picnic tables on the green lawn, they provide space for small gatherings in front of the street scene that leads to the reception area. Ireland Their booth had a more playful vibe, with a table on a green bike and a gold bathtub transformed into a sofa. Highlights from my first IMEX experience – Trade Show
I've been hearing all the rumors about IMEX for years, but never had the chance to experience it myself until this year. IMEX is often referred to as the events and incentives industry’s major conference and trade show. For newcomers, this can definitely be overwhelming. I was out of breath for the first few days...trying not to miss any must-see sessions or in-booth events that I bookmarked that sounded creative and fun. I'm primarily there to capture and record your thoughts - to be the eyes and ears for all my podcast listeners, followers, and clients. Maybe this adds to my feeling of being overwhelmed...I don't want you to miss anything. Honestly, until my last day in the showroom, I felt like I had failed in my mission. As with many shows, the pace was much slower that day (although foot traffic was still steady at many booths). But it gave me a chance to discover things I missed the…
Winning Strategies for Booth Staff Success – Trade Shows
I've been having a lot of conversations lately about booth staffing. Exhibit managers told me they were frustrated with the team's performance at the booth or even whether they showed up at the right time. Attendees were annoyed when staff jumped on them or shoved items at them as they passed the booth. Now, these are not new challenges by any means. Poor booth staff may be an ongoing problem for many exhibit team leaders (or even you), but it's not insurmountable. Over the years I have worked with many exhibition teams to improve the behavior of their booth staff. I’ve also published a few blog posts and podcast episodes before that included booth staffing tips. So in this episode, we're going to dive into Trade Show Insights Archives of some booth staffing strategies. You'll hear the following excerpt (click to listen to the full episode or read the blog post): For a more in-depth look at what exhibitor education…
