Ryder CEO: Electric vehicle technology needs an inflection point to work

May 23, 2024 For Ryder System CEO Robert Sanchez to double down on electric vehicles, there needs to be a catalyst that makes the technology more economical and operational in the commercial trucking industry. During his keynote at this year’s ACT Expo in Las Vegas, Sanchez was outspoken about how he sees electric trucks fitting into his fleet. “From our perspective, for commercial electric vehicles to work in the real world, we need breakthroughs in battery technology and expanded charging infrastructure. We need an inflection point, a credible technological breakthrough that drives mass adoption of new technologies,” Sanchez said, citing the evolution of the cell phone industry since 1984 and the launch of the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X as an example. “It weighed two and a half pounds, provided 30 minutes of talk time on a single charge, and took 10 hours to fully charge. JB Hunt President: Technology, Policy and

May 24, 2024 Shelley Simpson, president of JB Hunt Transportation Services, believes that in order for the industry to meet its overall goal of reducing transportation-related emissions, some changes need to happen. “We are all facing tensions that are affecting our businesses, our decisions and the future of our industry,” Simpson said during his keynote address at this year’s ACT Expo. “We feel this tension because of the inconsistency between sustainable technologies, emissions regulation policies and the economic rationale for adopting emerging technologies.” Simpson said a combination of tough deadlines at the state and federal levels, such as the California Air Resources Board’s Advanced Clean Fleet Rule and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s latest heavy-duty vehicle emissions standards, have put fleets in a precarious position. “When state and federal requirements are not aligned, it creates more problems for interstate operations and commerce, and for the innovation needed to meet those regulatory requirements,” Simpson said, adding that JB Hunt recently announced…
