Women’s History Month: Empowering the Next Generation
Jennifer Knight is the Deputy Assistant Secretary of ITA Textiles, Consumer Goods, Materials Industry, Critical Minerals and Metals Women’s History Month is an opportunity to honor the legacy of women who came before us and look ahead to the future of women and girls. At the International Trade Administration (ITA), we believe investing in young women means investing in a future where women can lead without limits. We also believe in committing to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility not just through words, but through actions. This starts with addressing barriers to inclusive economic growth and empowering women in our own communities. I recently attended a presentation at the Department of Commerce by three University of Delaware fashion and apparel masters students, Kendall Ludwig, Miranda Rack, and Hannah Laurits. Their research explored opportunities for sustainable apparel and the U.S.’s leadership in the production of technical textiles for industries such as pharmaceuticals and automotive. The presentation also highlighted the competitiveness and recent…
28 years later: Remembering
Today marks the 28th anniversary of the plane carrying Secretary of Commerce Ronald Brown and 34 others crashed while en route to a trade mission in Dubrovnik, Croatia, killing all aboard. ITA is committed to the goal of revitalizing American businesses and our international partners as they work to create business opportunities for the United States and newly independent Croatia. We pledge to remember the victims, 11 of whom were Commerce Department officials, including five of our own from ITA. This is an important day for the international trade community to reflect and remember the colleagues we have lost and honour the legacy they left behind. At ITA, we do this by continuing the work of our global trade missions and working to revitalise the Balkans despite the difficulties. We also honour our team members whose contributions we have made by naming the ITA Memorial Award after them. Please join us today in honoring these men and their families. Marissa…

Empowering Her: Transatlantic Partnership Empowers
Laura Gimenez, Acting Senior Commercial Officer, U.S. Embassy, Bucharest and President, EMPOWER HER Global Markets/Europe/Eurasia When women succeed, the economy succeeds. In the United States, there are over 12 million women-owned businesses, employing over 10 million people and generating combined sales of $2.1 trillion! Yet, women-owned businesses are not engaging in international business as fast as their male-owned counterparts. That’s why nearly three years ago, the International Trade Administration (ITA) and the American Chamber of Commerce in the European Union (AmCham EU) joined forces to create EMPOWER HER, an initiative to help boost women’s participation in international trade on both continents. Women’s participation in the global economy is critical to ensuring a prosperous, sustainable and inclusive economy for future generations. ITA, the AmCham EU, and the American Chambers of Commerce in Europe (ACE) Network recently reaffirmed their commitment to the EMPOWER HER initiative to advance women’s international business and trade empowerment. When it comes to women’s economic empowerment, it’s people…
