Since its launch in 1963, the Riviera has earned a reputation as a personal luxury car. It is a two-door hardtop based on General Motors’ E-body platform and is widely praised for its design. The second generation after 1966 was wider, longer, and 200 pounds heavier. Buick is confident in the car’s handling, saying it offers “complete control.”

Under the hood is a “Wildcat 465” 425ci Nailhead V8 fed by a four-barrel carburetor, rated at 340 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque when new. Power is sent rearward via a super-turbo three-speed automatic transmission. The black beauty’s listing shows that recent maintenance tasks include an oil change and replacement of the fuel filter and spark plugs.

According to the car’s data plate, it was originally available in Riviera Champagne color (color code S). The hidden headlight design is a work of art. I found a video that shows what they look like in action. It’s mesmerizing to watch the four-wheel housing spin from behind the grille, a feature that adds to the car’s mystique and appeal. Buick touts the Riviera as a “tuned car” that blends styling, performance, ride and handling.

This car earns few bonus points due to its rich feature content. Options include air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, power windows and dual exhaust tips. The bench seat features a fold-down center armrest, and the factory AM radio provides period-correct audio entertainment.

“We hear that the perfect car doesn’t exist,” Buick said. “So, what’s the closest thing we can give you?”
