of all americans Among the high-performance cars of the 1980s, the Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z was one of the coolest cars, even though it still seems to have its share of jokes. The fact that I grew up during that time period does tend to predispose me to comments like this, but in the 1980s, Chevy sold thousands of IROCs to people 10 years older than me, and they all loved the car. IROC is so 1980s and RadWood that when you look at one of these you can almost hear Ratt’s “Round and Round” on the stereo.
Furthermore, the Camaro IROC-Z is a pretty serious performance car that announces to the world that American performance cars are back and here to stay. Heck, some of the world’s most famous racers drive IROC-Zs on the circuits of the International Championship Series, the series from which the cars are named.
The downside is that over time many of these cars have been modified, abused, and often neglected by their fourth, fifth, and sixth high school age owners. Today, it’s difficult to find a good example of an iconic car from the 1980s.
Currently featured on AutoHunter is a truly stunning example of one of these cars, a 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z with 29,000 miles on it.
The selling dealer describes this 1987 IROC as having a 5.7-liter V8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Finished in Dark Red Metallic with gray cloth interior, this pony car is now available from the dealer with original books, GM Canada documents, a clean CARFAX report and a clear title.
The car’s dark red metallic paint appears to be in excellent original condition. The exterior features a rear spoiler, color-matched mirror caps, halogen fog lights, and original IROC-Z door decals. This IROC comes with factory-corrected 16-inch IROC-Z aluminum wheels shod with 245/50 Pacemark radial tires.
The interior appears to be a virtual time capsule, with original gray cloth upholstery on the door panels and bucket seats. The stock radio is still in mint condition. The original leather steering wheel is in almost new condition and the instrumentation (on a Canadian market car) features a 240 km/h speedometer as well as standard additional gauges such as a 7,000 rpm tachometer and readouts of temperature, voltage and fuel level. Everything looks perfect and stock.
Under the hood is the car’s original Tuned-Port Injection 5.7-liter V8 engine, which puts out 225 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 2,800 rpm. This is backed up by the factory four-speed automatic transmission. The only upgrade I can see is the cat-back Flowmaster dual exhaust system, which I personally love for its improved performance and awesome sound. Everything under the hood is ready to go.
If you’re like me and have always thought the IROC-Z was cool and want one of the best on the market, this is the car to bid on and win. To me, every inch of this car looks perfect with no flaws whatsoever.
The auction for this 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z with 29,000 miles will end on Monday, December 16, 2024 at 11:15 AM (MST).
