Model Year 1989 Marking The end of one of Mercedes-Benz’s most historic platforms: the R107 SL convertible, launched in 1971 and produced for almost two decades. By the time of its retirement, more than 150,000 had been sold in the United States. “Is the last game the best of them all?” We’ve picked out a sample from 1989 that you can use to find out.
Featured on AutoHunter is this 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560 SL. The car is being sold by a dealer in Watertown, Wisconsin, and the auction will end on Monday.
The SL is advertised as being able to transform into three different cars: hardtop, softtop and convertible. In this case, the Arctic White exterior complements the color-matched hardtop that comes with the car. Some areas of the country are just entering redemption season, while others are exiting. Regardless, this SL stands out for its unmodified originality and condition, especially considering it’s 35 years old.
The SL was positioned as a luxurious grand touring sports car for those who could afford to live a luxurious life. “Spoil yourself,” says one ad. Another read: “Have the car you want… just once… just once…”
Under the hood is a 5.6-liter V8 engine powered by a Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection system. When new, it was rated at 227 horsepower and 279 pound-feet of torque, respectable numbers for the era and certainly enough to move a two-seat roadster with authority.
According to CARFAX reports, the car has been accident-free. Ownership began in Louisiana, then moved to Florida, Delaware, Virginia, Maryland and Arizona before being acquired by the selling dealer. The vehicle has been driven in the desert Southwest for at least the past 13 years and underwent an Arizona emissions inspection in July 2023. Other historic maintenance includes repairs to the air conditioning compressor, fluids, power steering system and washer hoses in February 2021.
“Go forward. Enjoy it. Feel this Mercedes-Benz transform an ordinary back road into an unforgettable driving experience,” says Mercedes.
Are you ready to see what’s going on? If you’re not one of the 150,000 or so people lucky enough to buy an R107 SL new, then your opportunity is now knocking on your door, thanks to AutoHunter.
