2024 autoX Awards: Mahindra Thar has always been a rugged off-road SUV. Known for its practicality, it has always been the quintessential choice for adventurous driving. However, with the launch of the Thar Roxx, the five-door version of the SUV, Mahindra has elevated the model beyond its rugged roots, making it a more versatile, well-rounded offering. The Thar Roxx not only adds the practicality of an extra pair of doors, but also gets a fresh look with C-shaped LED DRLs, a redesigned grille and stylish 19-inch alloy wheels.
Firstly, the Thar Roxx is much larger than the three-door version. The wheelbase has been increased by 400mm and the overall length has been increased by 443mm, improving second-row space and available 644-litres of boot space. Now you can easily take your family or friends with you without compromising on comfort. The expanded dimensions also enhance its road presence. Mahindra has also upgraded the cabin with features and quality of materials that are on par with the XUV700. Highlights include dual 10.25-inch screens with smooth touch performance, wireless smartphone connectivity, ADAS, leatherette upholstery, panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, and more. In short, it has all the bells and whistles of a well-equipped family SUV.
Mahindra offers a range of powertrains for the Thar Roxx across trim levels. You can choose between a 2.0-liter petrol engine and a 2.2-liter diesel engine, both available in two different states of tune, mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The refinement of the diesel-powered Thar Roxx is so impressive that it takes you some time to realize you’re driving a diesel vehicle. Despite the modern interior, the rugged 4×4 features remain intact, allowing the SUV to tackle challenging terrain. For those who don’t feel like venturing off-road, there’s also a more affordable 4×2 version available, which will certainly save you some money. The only real problem with this SUV is the springy suspension. While great for absorbing bumps on rough trails, it reduces road comfort. This also has an impact on high-speed handling, which is very noticeable on track times. On the track, it struggled to follow its intended line around corners, thanks to bouncy suspension and somewhat vague steering. The Thar Roxx feels more at home on relaxed highway cruising.

Despite its limited handling, the Thar Roxx is a compelling offering from Mahindra. With increased quality, refinement and spaciousness, it has transcended its previous image as a lifestyle car and has now become a true family SUV. Priced starting at Rs 12.99 lakh and going up to Rs 22.49 lakh (ex-showroom), the Thar Roxx is available in multiple variants to suit different needs and budgets, each of which comes with rich features and powerful powertrains.
