autoX Awards 2024: The petrol-powered Tata Punch’s powertrain was one of the weakest aspects of our first drive; while smooth, it lacked impressive performance. However, the Punch EV offers a more powerful driving experience with 120 hp and 190Nm of torque, depending on which mode you select.

2024 autoX Awards: Of the electric contenders tested by our jury, the Tata Punch EV was one we were particularly eager to evaluate. The ICE-powered version of the Tata Punch has already impressed us, and it did the same in our first drive review of the electric version. But the question is – how will it stack up against the competition at this year’s autoX Awards? How does it compare to the overall appeal of the Tigor EV and Nexon EV?

Compared with the ICE model, the interior experience of the Punch EV is more unique. It features a dual-tone leather-wrapped steering wheel embellished with illuminated Tata logo. The fully digital instrument panel feels carefully integrated rather than an afterthought, with clear graphics and a wide range of functions. The touchscreen display also effectively complements the overall in-car experience. All in all, the Punch EV makes a strong first impression.

During our initial drives, the gasoline-powered Punch’s powertrain was one of its weakest aspects. While smooth, it lacks an impressive performance. However, the Punch EV offers a more powerful driving experience with 120 hp and 190Nm of torque, depending on which mode you select. In Eco mode, throttle response is soft, perfect for relaxed cruising. However, it can effortlessly reach triple-digit speeds before hitting a top speed of 120 km/h. City mode enhances throttle sensitivity and removes the speed cap, providing a practical setting for everyday driving. In fact, both modes are adequate for daily driving conditions. For those seeking excitement, Sport mode is the best choice. In this mode, throttle response is lively enough to create gaps easily, although it’s not quite quick enough.

The Punch EV’s handling is equally engaging and compliant. We had some complaints about the handling characteristics of the ICE-powered Punch, and Tata Motors’ engineers deserve credit for getting the handling balance right. The punch effortlessly absorbs undulations when working on rough or uneven surfaces. At the same time, it remains composed when pushed into corners and never feels out of place. The electric version exhibits equally impressive handling. Overall, the Tata Punch EV impressed the jury as a well-equipped compact SUV with proven handling dynamics.
