The 1 Series wasn’t pretty from the start, and the huge grille really looked out of place.

- BMW’s “double-coffin” grille has caused a lot of controversy since it was first introduced on the G80 M3.
- This strange 116i also comes with a set of gloss black aftermarket wheels.
Most people aren’t fans of the G80-generation BMW M3’s massive coffin-shaped kidney grille, but the owner of this 1 Series is clearly a car enthusiast who used it as inspiration when creating a custom body kit for his car.
The peculiar 1 Series you see has been listed for sale across Tanzania for 10,800,000 shillings (approximately $4,650), and while it appears to be mostly stock, it has had some modifications. This is mostly limited to the front end, where the grille, air intakes and bumper are inspired by the G80 M3.

First, we have to start with the grille. While we’ve become (somewhat) accustomed to the massive grille over the past few years, we still think it would look much better if it were separated from a horizontally extending piece of trim, or if the kidneys were simply reduced in size. This 1 Series owner does a decent job of replicating the size and shape of the G80’s grille, but it doesn’t fit in with the rest of the car’s design. Not at all.
The three vertical slats in the grille also feature the colors of the BMW M brand. Perhaps no other popular “modification” in the automotive industry screams “I’m a hard worker!” quite like painting these colors on your BMW’s grille. In our opinion, that’s as bad as putting an M badge on a base 3 Series or an AMG badge on a B-Class.

In addition to the grille, the 1 Series has lower air intakes shaped similarly to the G80, and a bumper with similar angles and creases to the M3. The car also received some other modifications, including the installation of bright blue parking lights and gloss black aftermarket wheels. The brake calipers are also painted red, which we guess is supposed to give off a sporty vibe.
So, do you think this is the ugliest Series 1 you’ve ever seen, or is its owner just a man with a vivid imagination?
