- BMW’s latest figures show that the M division had its best year ever in 2024.
- The M division sold 206,582 vehicles, accounting for 9.4% of BMW’s total production.
- Both the M2 and M3 saw growth, but the electric i4 M50 was the best seller.
BMW’s M performance brand had its best year ever in 2024, new data shows. Far from being a cog in BMW’s success, M is a key component, with its cars accounting for 9.4% of all BMWs sold in the past 12 months.

Last year, M broke the 200,000-unit mark for the first time in its history, with 202,530 cars delivered, and is making progress in 2024, with registrations reaching 206,582 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 2.0%.

You might be surprised or even disappointed to learn that the most popular cars amid an impressive year’s push are electric vehicles. Yes, the best-selling M car is the all-electric i4 M50, a four-door coupe with a 537-horsepower (544 PS / 400 kW) dual-motor drivetrain that can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds /hour (97 km/h).

The good news for more die-hard M fans is that the brand’s true M cars have experienced tremendous growth, ensuring they’ll be with us for some time to come. We don’t just mean that these are “real” M cars because they are powered by internal combustion engines. BMW itself distinguishes between M (performance) models such as the M340i, X7 M60i and i4 M50i, and so-called “performance” M models such as the M2, M3 and M5.
No doubt the M2 benefited from a recent power upgrade from 453 hp (460 PS) to 473 hp (480 PS), with sales up 64%, while M3 Touring registrations climbed 57%. Overall, performance car sales increased by 8% to 66,805 units, while overall M sales increased by a smaller 4%, and with the launch of the new hybrid M5 and M5 we see further growth in 2025 The improvement is no surprise. The tour begins arriving at dealers.
Even XM, which M fans love to hate, had a good year, BMW said. Data show that sales of plug-in SUVs will increase by 16% in 2024. But considering the product won’t go on sale until the second quarter of 2023, we’re not sure we’ll pay too much attention to that figure or BMW’s attempt to celebrate its performance.
Last year, we reported that XM sales fell 14.7% in its first full year in the U.S., with the model finding just 1,974 buyers by 2024 despite some generous discounts.
