BMW Skytop enters production, but is already sold out

  • The BMW Skytop Roadster will be produced in a limited edition of just 50 units.
  • Under the hood is a 625-horsepower V8 engine that accelerates the Skytop from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds.
  • The concept marks a return to a more sophisticated design ethos, with the front end restrained.

Well, you asked for it, and BMW has done it again – took a jaw-dropping concept car, dangled it in front of the public, and decided to actually build it. Meet the BMW Skytop, a two-seat sports car originally developed as a design study for the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Now, since there is enough demand right personBMW is doing very limited production of the Skytop.

Here’s the thing: They’re only building 50 of them, so if you’re not on the VIP list yet, you’re out of luck. As expected, each of the 50 cars was claimed for an undisclosed price, and BMW is in no rush to share.

For reference, BMW’s recently launched ultra-exclusive special model 3.0 CSL (also limited to 50 units) is priced at €750,000 (approximately $820,000 in 2022). Some of them were later sold on the secondary market for as much as $1.35 million. So if history repeats itself, Skytop will likely follow the same trajectory.

“The BMW Skytop is a truly exotic design that combines driving dynamics with elegance,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW Group Design Director. “We are finally able to announce that it will be built. This car is like a dream come true, thanks to the positive response and the enthusiastic team involved in the project.”

Based on the BMW 8 Series

Following the same formula BMW is using on the 2022 3.0 CSL, the Skytop joins the ranks of other impossibly high-priced showpieces using off-the-shelf components wrapped in a custom package. The Skytop concept car is based on the existing BMW 8 Series and is redesigned with a custom body and a targa-like semi-open cockpit.

V8 turbine power

window._taboola = window._taboola || (); _taboola.push({ mode: ‘thumbnails-oc-2×1’, container: ‘taboola-mid-article-thumbnails-organic’, position: ‘middle article thumbnail organic’ , target_type: ‘mix’ });

Power comes from BMW’s most powerful V8, the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine as the flagship M model, which outputs 625 horsepower. Equipped with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive, the Skytop accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds. So, yes, it’s fast, and yes, you’ll never drive it. So that’s it.

stay classy

However, what really makes the Skytop stand out is the design. BMW has raided its hottest archives, blending elements from the Z8 and 507 roadsters to create something that’s both retro and modern – and much better looking than the 8 Series coupe and convertible models on which it’s based. It’s a tribute to a more refined and elegant era of BMW design.

The signature shark-nosed front, flowing rear, and aluminum spine that extends from the hood to the trunk all indicate that this isn’t just another roadster. Details are where the Bavarian brand flexes its design muscles, like the removal of door handles in favor of subtle winglets, and custom-designed LED lights that are the thinnest on any production car.

Everything inside is luxurious

In terms of interior, BMW continues the customized luxury theme. At least in concept, the cabin features hand-stitched reddish-brown leather with intricate brogue detailing. The technology is everything you’d expect from a range-topping BMW, with a head-up display and a Bowers & Wilkins audio system ensuring your playlist sounds as premium as the car itself.

As mentioned earlier, all 50 units are gone. Unless you’re willing to pay a ridiculous premium on the secondary market, the Skytop remains just another piece of automotive art out of reach for most of us. So enjoy these photos as this is about as close as you can get.
