- The Tourbillon’s 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 engine was developed by Cosworth.
- Three electric motors complement the V16 engine for a total of 1,775 horsepower.
- Bugatti says the new supercar will hit 248 mph (400 km/h) in less than 25 seconds.
It’s been five months since Bugatti shook up the supercar world with its hybrid tourbillon. Now we’ve had our best chance to hear it in action, and as we had hoped, the massive V16 sounds more musical than the W16 it replaces.

Since deliveries of tourbillon watches to customers will not begin until 2026, Bugatti will continue to test and develop its latest creation. It was recently photographed up close at Rimac’s massive factory in Zagreb, Croatia, and while driving engineers didn’t push the prototype anywhere near its limits, the V16’s sound can be heard loud and clear.

The engine was developed by Cosworth and is a naturally aspirated 8.3-liter engine. What makes this big engine even more impressive is that it revs to 9,000 rpm, well beyond the 7,100 rpm limit of the Chiron Super Sport with its quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16. The high-revving nature of the V16, combined with its unique configuration and lack of forced induction, also means it sounds quite unique.

At low revs, its soundtrack is rather basic, not unlike the famous W16. At higher revs, however, it starts to sound more like a high-capacity V8. As mentioned earlier, the driver’s action is easy and the shift times are short, which means the tourbillon is nowhere near its redline. Based on Bugatti’s own video, if the revs hit 9,000 rpm, we suspect it would sound absolutely ridiculous.
The engine produces 986 horsepower and is supported by three electric motors for a total output of up to 1,775 horsepower. Bugatti says the tourbillon will hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2 seconds, then accelerate to 124 mph (200 km/h) in less than 5 seconds and finish in 10 seconds 0-186 mph (300 km/h) sprint. Within 10 seconds. It should also hit 248 mph (400 km/h) in 25 seconds. The Tourbillon could also be the car Bugatti used to try and break the 311 mph (500 km/h) barrier.
