BYD India targets plug-in hybrid vehicle market to meet growing demand

BYD India considering launching new range of cars in India, including plug-in hybrids

BYD India is considering launching plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to cater to the growing demand in the Indian market. BYD India’s electric passenger vehicle (EPV) business head Rajeev Chauhan hinted that the company is evaluating the possibility of launching plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in India in the next two years. The move is part of BYD’s broader strategy to tap into the growing interest in hybrid vehicles.

Chauhan revealed that BYD India is currently conducting a feasibility study to bring plug-in hybrid vehicles to the market. He explained that the company has been closely monitoring consumer interest in hybrid vehicles over the past 18 months. If the momentum continues, BYD may launch affordable plug-in hybrid models from its global portfolio to Indian consumers.

He stressed that plug-in hybrids are their strength and they have been evaluating this option. The company wants to study it for another 6-8 months. If the momentum of hybrids continues, they will launch plug-in hybrid models at affordable prices.

India’s shift towards hybrid vehicles is part of a larger trend in the auto industry. In addition to pure electric vehicles, BYD’s plug-in hybrid vehicles also have considerable sales worldwide, accounting for about 1.7 million of the BYD brand’s total sales of 3 million last year.

BYD India’s current product line-up consists entirely of electric vehicles, including the Atto 3 SUV and the Seal sedan. The company recently discontinued its e6 MPV, which will be replaced by the eMax 7 on October 8, 2024. In addition, BYD is considering launching an all-new electric SUV, priced competitively in the Rs 20 lakh range, which is intended to compete with the upcoming Creta EV.

BYD’s move comes as other players in the Indian market are turning their attention to hybrid and electric vehicles. SAIC’s Indian subsidiary JSW MG Motor India recently announced plans to launch locally produced plug-in hybrid and strong hybrid vehicles. JSW MG Motor India director Parth Jindal said the company aims to sell 1 million electric vehicles by 2020 to position itself as a leader in India’s new energy vehicle sector.

As acceptance of hybrid technology grows in India, BYD and its rivals are positioning themselves to cater to the country’s growing automotive market, where consumers increasingly seek more environmentally friendly and cost-effective driving options.
