Think of it as a luxurious little house that takes you to your destination
- General Motors Design has unveiled the fourth and final concept car in its line of autonomous vehicles.
- The Level 5 self-driving car, called Cadillac OpenSpace, is actually a luxury sedan.
- Although it is just a concept, it hints at the future of RVs redefining luxury self-driving travel.
Concept cars are often wild, fun, and even a little crazy. At the same time, few can match the level of luxury found in Cadillac’s OpenSpace RV. Two years after first teasing us with vague details, General Motors Design decided it was time to peel back the concept’s digital layers. So, let’s dig into what exactly OpenSpace is, why General Motors might be bringing it back into the spotlight, and what it hints at about the future of luxury mobility.
OpenSpace was initially considered to be the largest of Cadillac’s four self-driving concept vehicles, including the futuristic InnerSpace coupe, the single-seat PersonalSpace flying car and the six-seat SocialSpace van.
Cadillac envisions OpenSpace with Level 5 driving autonomy, meaning it can theoretically travel from point A to point B with zero input or attention from the driver. And once you arrive? This is where things get interesting, promising an extraordinary experience.

“Once stationary, the vehicle expands its central living space and provides access to the roof deck, allowing passengers to enjoy the unparalleled views and experiences provided by Cadillac’s exclusive Resort partnership,” the automaker said. “This seems to be an inevitable future, Although it is still far away. Once vehicles can reliably drive themselves, why wouldn’t buyers want an ultra-luxury sedan like this?
This recreational electric vehicle not only transports passengers to their destinations, but also blends neatly into its surroundings. Cadillac gives it a “reflective appearance that softens the vehicle’s silhouette, allowing views of the destination to blend seamlessly into the interior.” There’s no doubt that a vehicle like this can stand out in certain spaces. Helping it blend in with thoughtful attention is a nice touch.

It’s worth noting that, at this stage, Open Space remains little more than a series of concept drawings. Level 5 autonomous driving is still years or even decades away from being implemented in everyday production vehicles. Integrating it into something like this feels more like designing a self-driving tiny house than a car due to its sheer size and luxurious features. While this approach may not excite traditional car enthusiasts, when fully autonomous vehicles eventually emerge, it will be a very stylish way to get around.
