Watch an unconventional off-road stands between two SUVs with huge price differences

One of the main selling points of the Dacia Duster is that it is one of the most affordable SUVs you can buy in Europe. But don’t let the price fool you, as it’s also one of the toughest contenders in the class. So, does it have a chance to fight more expensive, larger off-road vehicles like the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser? Thanks to Carwow, we now have the answer, which may not be what you expect.
The battle between price and performance
For this unconventional confrontation, the team chose the 4×4 version of the Dacia Duster, which costs £23,550 ($30,400) in the UK. By comparison, the diesel-powered land cruiser costs more than three times the price, starting at £74,995 ($96,800). So we are considering the serious price gap, but what about performance?
2024 Dacia Duster Review: Is it still the king of budget SUVs?
Well, Duster has some tips, it turns out. Despite the large price difference, the Dacia is significantly lighter, with a scale of just 1,390 kg (3,064 lbs) compared to the Land Cruiser’s 2,335 kg (5,148 lbs). Most importantly, due to its smaller footprint, the Duster has higher ground clearance (217mm/8.5″ vs. 205mm/8.1″) and a tighter turning radius. It’s obvious that this compact SUV is more than just a pretty face.
Of course, when it comes to electricity, Duster can’t put the candle on the Toyota Land Cruiser’s 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine that drives 201 HP (150 kW). More than just twice Duster’s 1.2-liter mild hybrid turbo engine has 128 hp (96 kW). Toyota also has excellent suspension, a complete set of off-road technology including center and rear differentials, low-end gears and multiple off-road modes, as well as all-terrain tires, making it a more sophisticated machine to deal with tough terrain.

Ultimately, while Dacia Duster does do well, the Toyota Land Cruiser is ranked No. 1. In severe off-road and on land, this is still the obvious leader. capture? That price tag. Land cruisers are too expensive for most European buyers, and this Duster becomes an obvious choice for those who want to walk without completely exhausting their bank accounts.
Still, for budget-conscious buyers in between, people still hope. Toyota is believed to be preparing for the highly anticipated Land Cruiser FJ, which may have debuted as early as this year, offering top-notch off-road performance at a more accessible price for bigger siblings.
