Car air conditioning compressor cycle problems

The car air conditioning compressor cycles on and off based on the temperature and pressure of the air conditioning system. This normal cycle occurs at levels predetermined by the manufacturer to protect the air conditioning system from excessive pressure or low temperatures.

Why does my car’s air conditioning compressor cycle on and off rapidly?

Rapid cycling of your car’s air conditioning compressor may indicate a problem with your air conditioning system. The compressor cycling clutch device interrupts power to the compressor clutch coil as a safety measure to prevent compressor damage, frozen evaporator coils, or damaged A/C hoses. Operating at extreme temperatures and pressures may affect compressor oil quality and circulation, potentially exceeding the design limits of the air conditioning assembly.
