On Juneteenth, communities across the United States will come together to celebrate Juneteenth National Independence DayJuneteenth marks the historic day in 1865 when Union troops marched into Galveston, Texas, and freed the last enslaved Black Americans. As we celebrate the anniversary of the end of slavery and those who fought for American freedom, Juneteenth also offers an opportunity for all of us to recommit to continuing the fight for freedom, opportunity, and liberation for all Americans.

People often ask me why we celebrate Juneteenth. A common misconception is that Juneteenth is only a holiday for African Americans. When I hear this, I think of the words of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who asked others the same question: “What is the Fourth of July to American slaves?” Regardless of race, culture or background, It is meaningful for every American to celebrate this holidayAs human beings, we can acknowledge our differences while also cherishing our common bonds. As Americans, our common identity is freedom, and we celebrate freedom on Juneteenth.

I invite you to learn more about Juneteenth through National Museum of African American History and CultureIf you happen to be in Houston, Texas, consider visiting Liberation Park, 10 acres of land purchased by former slaves in honor of Juneteenth. However you celebrate, take a moment to reflect, remember, and recommit to a brighter, more equal future.
