GM President Mark Reuss says this new version of the Bolt will be better, but won’t be much more expensive
- General Motors will resume production of the Bolt EV for the 2026 model year.
- If all goes well, it will actually arrive in dealerships in 2025.
- It’s expected to cost slightly more than the outgoing version, but also offer more range.
The Chevrolet Bolt will return to production next year as a 2026 model, and GM plans to capitalize on the model. GM President Mark Reuss shared an update at GM’s Investor Day, saying that while it won’t be built on a platform that’s not now called Ultium, it will still offer some new features.
The meeting was held in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and Royce immediately highlighted Bolt. For one thing, he said, pricing is “only slightly higher than the 2023 Bolt.” That’s good news, because Chevrolet’s cheapest electric car right now is the Equinox EV, which costs $34,995. Pricing for the 2023 Bolt starts at $28,795.

Additionally, he expects it to provide better overall value to customers compared to the 2023 version. According to Automotive News , he even took a small dig at Ford and its unique team tasked with developing low-cost electric vehicles.
“The 2026 Bolt will provide the same value as the original Bolt, if not more, and it will be a moneymaker for us,” Reuss said. “This is a direct result of investing in next-generation electric vehicle platforms and we don’t need to create a skunkworks to build affordable electric vehicles. We know how to do it.”
We also know it will be built at GM’s Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas. Its interior is expected to be similar to what we saw in the Trax. The biggest news for Bolt fans may be that charging speeds are about to be significantly improved — something that’s long overdue for a car that’s already carved out a niche in the U.S. EV market.
But this is where things get really interesting. General Motors President Mark Reuss revealed that the new Bolt will not be launched separately. “It will just be a family member on the Bolt, including a lower-cost option,” Royce said. So, we are looking for a Bolt family– Yes, cheaper models are included.
detail? Well, there are so few of them that it’s annoying. There’s no word yet on whether we’ll see the original Bolt EV return in more hatchback-like form, or if GM will lean further into the crossover vibe of an EUV. Or maybe they’ll bring us some new budget options. One thing is for sure, General Motors appears to be getting serious about expanding the Bolt product line beyond its quirky niche.
