  • The electric SUV is essentially a heavy-loaded Baojun Yep Plus from China.
  • It may share the same specifications and offer an affordable price tag.

Updated 2/13: Chevrolet released official photos and videos of Spark Euv ahead of its upcoming launch in Brazil. These images confirm that the EV is essentially the same as the Baojun YEP Plus.

Chevrolet found a clever (read: cost-effective) way to make the most of its SAIC-GM-FORING joint venture by reshaping Baojun Yep Plus, one of China’s most fascinating electric cars. This fully electric Urban SUV made its unexpected debut at a special event to celebrate Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary in the Brazilian market.

The new model will be sold in Brazil as a Chevrolet Spark Euv, essentially a Baojun Yep Plus with a Chevrolet badge hanging on the grille without other significant changes. Despite its name and compact proportions, the Spark EUV absolutely has nothing in common with the Spark EV, a short-lived electric hatchback sold by Chevrolet in certain U.S. states from 2013 to 2017, and was then phased out as a Bolt.

Inside, Spark Euv borrows Baojun Yep Plus’s modern digital cockpit, including dual 10-inch monitors. It is also expected to inherit the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADA) of the Chinese Twins, which was nothing more than developed by drone manufacturer DJI.

Although GM has not disclosed the full specifications or release schedule for the Spark EUV, the announcement does bring a broader commitment: The company plans to launch 10 new models to the Brazilian market by 2025, five of which are classified as “Main” launch. Given its potential appeal and positioning, Spark EUV is likely to be one of the more important additions.

Baojun Yep Plus

According to the Baojun Yep Plus’s wheelbase of 3,996mm (157.3 inches) and 2,560mm (100.8 inches) in size, the Spark Euv will be crowned with Chevrolet’s minimum product. While the Baojun lineup includes five-door versions, a three-door version, and even a pickup concept, it is unclear whether Chevrolet plans to bring these alternative body styles to the Brazilian market and along with the re-created model.

The Spark EUV will likely borrow powertrains directly from the Chinese spec twins, which have a rear-mounted electric motor that offers a 101 hp (75 kW/102 PS) and a 41.9 kWh battery pack. This setup provides a considerable 401 km (249 miles) range in China’s CLTC cycle.

Maybe this tiny off-road vehicle might be its affordability. Although Chevrolet has not disclosed the price in Brazil, the same Baojun Yep Plus in China starts at just 93,800 yen (about $12,900).

In addition to revealing the Chevrolet Spark EUV, the company has also announced the 100th anniversary of the birth of Onix, Tracker and S10, an exclusive lineup designed specifically for the Brazilian market.
