With the recent approval, progress continues Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) Expansion and Modernization ProjectThe plan involves completing the project in time for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the design, timeline and cost finalised before construction begins in spring 2025.
City officials have long argued that Los Angeles is at a competitive disadvantage in attracting large citywide conventions due to a lack of contiguous space, especially as competitors have completed or are in the process of completing major expansions. The new building will connect the two existing South and West Exhibit Halls, adding 190,000 square feet of space to create a continuous concourse, and will add 55,000 square feet of new meeting room space and 95,000 square feet of multi-purpose space. The plan also includes a redesign of Gilbert Lindsay Plaza, which will increase public open space and become an exciting outdoor event venue.
Adam Burke, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Commission, told the media: “The expansion and modernization of the Los Angeles Convention Center is critical to the continued recovery of our local economy. Citywide conventions support thousands of jobs and hundreds of businesses across every region and community in Los Angeles, and we thank the City Council for its leadership in today’s vote to advance this critical initiative. As one of the tourism industry’s premier convention destinations, we look forward to seeing this world-class facility open.”
