The Savannah Convention Center is located on the banks of the historic Savannah River.

Convention centers across the country are constantly improving, upgrading to keep up with technology and facilities, expanding to attract more groups and city visitors, or increasing their visibility to stay competitive in the market. Here are some of them.

Savannah Convention Center

The expansion underscores the Savannah Convention Center’s commitment to providing guests with unparalleled amenities and services, further enhancing its reputation as a premier destination for events of all sizes.

The SCC is Georgia’s first LEED Gold-certified convention center and has been managed by the Georgia World Congress Center Authority since 2014. As of press time, no scheduled opening date has been announced.

Fontainebleau Miami Beach

The Shoreline Convention Center will have five floors.

Coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the legendary seaside resort, the new building will span five floors and 45,000 square feet of meeting and event space ranging from intimate to grand, with an overall look that reflects the architectural legacy of its original designer, Morris Lapidus.

The Shoreline Conference Center will include a 16,500-square-foot divisible ballroom with an outdoor terrace; a 9,500-square-foot junior ballroom; 15 total meeting rooms; and a 15,000-square-foot pre-function area. Other standout features include a grand staircase that pays homage to the “Stairway to Nowhere” at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach; floor-to-ceiling windows in meeting rooms to let in natural light; outdoor street-level meeting spaces; LED walls and signage; and a 7,000-square-foot tidal rooftop terrace with beautiful ocean views. With sustainability as a top priority, the Shoreline Conference Center was built to LEED certification standards, including insulated glass to control interior temperatures and reduce energy use, and a rainwater collection and recycling system for water efficiency.

Los Angeles Convention Center

With the recent approval, progress continues Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) Expansion and Modernization ProjectThe plan involves completing the project in time for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the design, timeline and cost finalised before construction begins in spring 2025.

LACC recently acquired sculptures by South African artist Marco Olivier.

City officials have long argued that Los Angeles is at a competitive disadvantage in attracting large citywide conventions due to a lack of contiguous space, especially as competitors have completed or are in the process of completing major expansions. The new building will connect the two existing South and West Exhibit Halls, adding 190,000 square feet of space to create a continuous concourse, and will add 55,000 square feet of new meeting room space and 95,000 square feet of multi-purpose space. The plan also includes a redesign of Gilbert Lindsay Plaza, which will increase public open space and become an exciting outdoor event venue.

Adam Burke, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Commission, told the media: “The expansion and modernization of the Los Angeles Convention Center is critical to the continued recovery of our local economy. Citywide conventions support thousands of jobs and hundreds of businesses across every region and community in Los Angeles, and we thank the City Council for its leadership in today’s vote to advance this critical initiative. As one of the tourism industry’s premier convention destinations, we look forward to seeing this world-class facility open.”

Broward County Convention Center

The Sandpiper is located on the first floor and has the option of being divided into two rooms.

A new convention center district is coming. The much-anticipated $1.3 billion Broward County Convention Center The expansion project has been completed, giving the center a whole new look with an impressive 800,000 square feet of space in the main exhibition hall and loading dock.

In 2025, the sun-soaked venue will get even bigger. An additional 1.2 million square feet will be added to the venue, including a new expansive waterfront plaza, an amphitheater and a 29-story Omni Fort Lauderdale headquarters hotel directly connected to the convention center. Expansion highlights include:

  • An upscale 801-room headquarters hotel on campus, operated by Omni Hotels, seamlessly connects all activities

  • Gold LEED-certified building aligns activities with environmentally friendly practices without compromising luxury or comfort

Austin Convention Center

Although Austin is the 11th largest city in the United States, the Texas capital ranks only 59th in terms of the number of convention facilities. That’s about to change. In late October, the Austin City Council approved the selection of two joint venture companies as the architect and construction manager for the Austin Convention Center’s redevelopment and expansion. The $1.2 billion redevelopment and expansion project will demolish and rebuild the center over four years, nearly doubling the rentable space and keeping the convention center competitive in the market. The redevelopment will also provide a community-friendly event space that will transform the Southeast District of downtown and provide a connection between downtown and East Austin.

Many area improvements are also planned, and by the end of the decade, light rail service will be running from the convention center to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, which may have its own expansion plans. Stay tuned.
