In an effort to provide the industry with more clarity, the Meetings Industry Association (MIA) has developed a practical guide to help the business meetings and events industry prepare for the impending introduction of Martin’s Law.
The trade association has partnered with leading security and risk management experts GSA Global to develop a step-by-step roadmap to help the industry stay ahead of potential requirements so it is ready when the law is enacted.
This extensive guidance provides details of the existing legal framework that venues must comply with to ensure the safety of their staff, visitors and the public, as well as information on anticipated Martin’s Law. It also provides useful information on the impact of venues of different sizes as well as training checklists, risk assessment templates and communication protocols.
Figen Murray, the driving force behind the legislation, has endorsed the guidance. She said: “The terrorism threat landscape is complex and ever-changing. A key part of the necessary preparations for Martin’s Law is to create a good security culture and clearly communicate the relevant processes to all employees. Earlier this year, it was disappointing that from MIA Insights has learned that 43% of venues are currently unsure whether their organization is ready to introduce this technology, so I am very grateful to MIA for working with GSA Global on this roadmap and for their continued commitment to encouraging the business meetings and events sector. Strengthen security.”
MIA CEO Kerrin MacPhie said: “MIA’s mission is to champion quality standards, education, research and best practice, so we have been very supportive of Figen Murray’s pursuit of ensuring venues do all they can to reduce risk and improve safety standards for everyone .
“At Connect Day in Manchester in December 2023, she shared her son Martyn Hett’s story following the Manchester Arena attack in May 2017, delivering a poignant keynote speech that drew a standing ovation. Having found through our quarterly MIA Insights that 80% of organizations would benefit from hands-on guidance, we are keen to join forces with GSA Global to produce this comprehensive industry-specific roadmap.”
Aaron Jones, Director of Protective Services at GSA Global said: “While the legislation has not yet been legally authorized, the Government has committed to the introduction of Martin’s Law. Therefore, although MIA’s guidance does not constitute legal advice, it provides practical steps to encourage venues to review their security practices and strengthen Preparing for emergencies ultimately provides a safer environment for people to gather and a safer and more secure future for all.”
In recognition of her work as a powerful advocate for public safety and compassion across the UK and beyond, and her tireless campaign for Martin’s Law, Fagan Murray received a Special Recognition Award at the association’s recent miaList .
