Continental’s projection system turns side windows into

Screens have become an important part of modern cars, and in recent years we’ve seen everything from front-seat passenger displays to 55-inch displays. However, future displays will not be limited to indoors.

On the contrary, Continental used CES to showcase their window projection technology. Designed to show content to people outside, the system combines a pico projector with a side window that can be electrically dimmed to act as a projection surface.

When activated, the windows are completely darkened while information is projected onto the windows via a device located in the headliner. The projector is capable of displaying “extremely high-resolution” images and graphics and can be easily personalized.

Speaking of software, there is eTravel.companion, which uses artificial intelligence to display relevant information. As Continental explains, “Based on data, learned preferences and the current situation, the software generates suggestions in real time, which can be displayed in the rear window before getting into the car.”

Usage varies by application, but it can be used to display charging information for electric vehicles. Additionally, if the battery is low, the display may suggest nearby charging stations.

Continental also mentioned the possibility of letting owners express their opinions. In particular, if you’re heading to a stadium to watch a game, the software may suggest displaying the team’s logo on the side windows.

It’s also easy to imagine other possible applications, such as for ride-hailing services. Here, the display can be used to show the name of the person that particular car is picking up.
