Life in the 1950s It was a time of optimism, prosperity, and the pursuit of the American Dream. One of the iconic cars that was common on the roads during that era was the Chevrolet Grand Tourer. In the 1950 model year alone, Chevrolet sold over 1.5 million of the cars. One of these cars has survived the last 75 or so years and is now on the collectors’ market:
Today’s pick is a 1950 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe Coupe, for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Salem, Oregon. (Click on the link to view the listing)
“Senior owned, very clean, everything works great! Fun to drive,” the listing reads.
The car was repainted in 2018 in what the seller calls Spectra Master Blue. The final look is neat, and one of the unique exterior design elements is a set of Chevrolet Corvette polished aluminum hubcaps wrapped in Coker Classic wide whitewall tires. The paint looks well-maintained, and a set of dual exhaust tips at the rear give it a strong presence.

The Chevrolet Deluxe was sold from 1941 to 1952. Due to the impact of World War II on domestic automobile production, the design remained essentially the same until 1949. The changes for 1949 were significant, featuring a new grille, unique parking lights, and redesigned body lines. The 1950 Chevrolet models were advertised as “the first, the finest, and the lowest cost.” One of the ads continued, “It gives you the best of all, beauty, driving and riding comfort, economy, comfort and safety – all at the lowest price.” To illustrate this pricing, Chevrolet cars at the time ranged from $1,300 to around $2,000.

The seller says the 12,654 miles listed on the car are genuine, though verifying that number can be difficult (especially with a five-digit odometer). Under the hood comes a 216.5cid “Thriftmaster” inline-six. New 1950 Chevrolets had the option of a new Powerglide automatic transmission, but this car comes with the standard column-type three-speed manual. The seller says mechanical repairs include replacing the gas tank, sending unit, oil pan gasket, coil springs, shock absorbers, and rear brake cylinder. The radio, however, is non-functional.

Are you ready to enjoy the features of a high-priced car plus the operating and maintenance savings that Chevrolet promises? This Deluxe is for you. List price is $23,500.
