Daily Picks: 1974 MG MGB Roadster

Age is just a number, right? Some cars are so well maintained that you wouldn’t notice they’re half a century old. If a car is a bright yellow two-seat convertible with a sports suspension and a manual transmission, its fun is timeless – even if it’s 50 years old.

Today’s Featured is a 1974 MG MGB Roadster, for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Tucson, Arizona. (Click on the link to view the listing)

The listing states that it has been “garaged mostly.” The seller says the car is rust-free, and the photos back that up (photos 28-35 show the underbody in detail). Perhaps the car is in such good condition because of the preservative that was used to protect it when it was new.

The original MG MGB was produced from 1962 onwards and had a lifespan of approximately 18 years. Assembly was initially carried out by the British Motor Corporation and later by British Leyland. Some changes were made to the design in 1974 to bring the car into compliance with US crash regulations; one of the updates was the addition of oversized rubber bumper covers.

The manufacturer touted the MGB in advertising as a car that embodied “the great sports car driving experience.” The car was also proudly described as “clean, compact and agile.” These are the kind of buzzwords that enthusiasts love to hear. After all, British sports cars aren’t known for their speed, but for their deft handling.

Power up front comes from a reportedly displacement-matched 1,800cc inline-four with twin SU carburetors. The engine was rebuilt in 1989, and the clutch was replaced at the same time. A four-speed manual transmission sends torque to the rear wheels, and the odometer shows 151,890 miles. The seller says the car has been well-maintained and has service records.

MGB claims that “Rack-and-pinion steering, race-proven suspension and front disc brakes combine to give you precise, sure-footed handling and braking – a response that transforms driving stress into driving pleasure. You experience it at its best when the road still touches the edge of nature and the air is filled with the sweet scent of dirt.”

Are you ready to drive a nimble British convertible sports car and head out into the fragrant nature? Let’s go.

Asking price is $14,500 or best offer.
