Dodge finally makes a cool Camaro, but you can’t buy it

  • Dodge has unveiled the Hornet R/T FC1-X, which will compete in the Nitrocross series.
  • The car’s four electric motors produce 1,070 horsepower, propelling it from 0 to 60 mph in 1.4 seconds.
  • Even though Nitrocross isn’t NASCAR, it has a young fan base that’s attractive to Dodge.

The Hornet is Dodge’s most important model in more than a decade, but people don’t care about it because the company has sold just 23,436 of them in the U.S. this year. By comparison, Ford sold 37,943 Escapes in the second quarter alone.

It’s brutal, but Dodge has finally unveiled a cool Hornet. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to buy one, as it will be used in the 2024-2025 Nitrocross series.

The Hornet R/T FC1-X is a high-performance electric vehicle that will compete in Group E and features four axial flux electric motors with a combined output of 1,070 hp (798 kW / 1,085 PS). These motors enable this all-wheel drive beast to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 96 km/h) in 1.4 seconds.

In addition to its high-performance powertrain, the rally car also features a Dodge-style livery that closely resembles the road-going model. Of course, there’s no way the two cars will be confused, as the FC1-X is a two-door coupe with a massive rear wing and NASA-grade diffuser.

These are not the only features of this car as it has a tubular chassis, adjustable double wishbone suspension and 12 inches of wheel travel. It is also equipped with an Alcon braking system and adjustable anti-roll bars.

Dodge will partner with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing to enter four cars, with drivers including Lia Block, Robin Larsson, Fraser McConnell and Andres Bakkerud.

Dodge CEO Matt McAlear said Nitrocross is the “perfect platform” for the brand because about 75 percent of fans are between the ages of 18 and 34. This gives the company a way to promote the Bumblebee to a “young, enthusiastic new audience.”
