Does your Camry smell bad? Toyota will give you $100 off

  • Toyota has agreed to pay a $7,500 settlement to the plaintiffs involved in the case.
  • California Camry owners can get up to $100 for out-of-pocket HVAC repairs.
  • The lawsuit claims mold growth in the HVAC system caused a persistent foul odor inside the Camry.

If you own a 2012-2015 Toyota Camry purchased or leased in California, you may be eligible for $100 in compensation from the company. What is the cause? A faulty HVAC system can cause unpleasant odors to waft throughout your vehicle’s cabin during the winter and summer.

In 2015, a class-action lawsuit was filed in Florida over the alleged odor problem. The lawsuit stated that owners smelled a bad odor when they turned on their air conditioners, and even after repairs, the odor remained. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit believed that a design flaw in the plant caused moisture to accumulate in the system, triggering mold growth.

While the Florida judge ruled in Toyota’s favor, the lawsuit later continued in California, where it won. Toyota has agreed to settle, though it denies all allegations.

Anyone who resides in California and owns, purchases and/or leases a 2012 to 2015 Camry XV50 in the state before May 31, 2024, can get reimbursed up to $100 for certain out-of-pocket expenses incurred for replacing and installing activated carbon filters.

Interestingly, this $100 reimbursement only applies to owners who incur out-of-pocket expenses after May 31, 2024. Owners who have unexpected expenses on or before May 31, 2024, can apply for reimbursement of reasonable, unreimbursed expenses for installing a charcoal filter and/or flushing the air conditioner evaporator.

Each plaintiff in the lawsuit will receive $7,500. Attorneys representing the class action are seeking $4.1 million in attorney fees and $350,000 in costs.

The court will decide whether to approve the settlement on October 30, 2024. Vehicle owners can visit this website and use the VIN lookup tool to check if they are eligible for compensation. They can also file a claim through the website.
