  • The accident occurred during the warm-up phase of last week’s Mille Miglia event in Austria.
  • A video documenting the aftermath of the accident has gone viral on social media, showing the driver’s reaction.

Despite repeated warnings about the dangers of distracted driving, people still seem to think they can get away with using their phones while driving. This behavior allegedly caused a serious accident in Austria, when a rare 1950s Jaguar XK120 crashed during the Mille Miglia.

The incident happened last week on a quiet country road near Elsbesen. According to local reports, a 23-year-old Hungarian woman was distracted by her mobile phone and crashed her silver Opel Insignia into a classic Jaguar.

Her sedan hit a Jaguar driven by Italian fans Giuseppe Cerbone and Nicolo Bottini Bongrani. Fortunately, all three suffered only minor injuries, but the Italian appeared to be covered in blood – possibly due to the lack of airbags and the force of the impact.

A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media platforms such as X, Facebook and TikTok, and was viewed millions of times. According to an Austrian newspaper crown newspaperthe woman admitted she was on the phone when the accident occurred. In the video, the Jaguar crew can be heard swearing in Italian, still in shock from what just happened.

The XK120 was now battered, with severe damage to the right side, crumpled body panels and damaged front suspension. Sadly, this can be a total loss. Restored versions of the British sports car are currently priced from €35,000 ($39,000) to €250,000 ($280,000), depending on their condition and rarity.

The classic car was taking part in a practice session for the Mille Miglia warm-up race. The Austrian version of the rally was held for the first time in Salzburg last weekend.

The event is open to cars that competed in the original Mille Miglia race held in Italy between 1927 and 1957, as well as classic sports cars built between 1958 and 1976. Last year also saw the Porsche Challenge, in which 20 models built between 1977 and 2024 competed for a week in the Austrian Alps.
