Electric versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are in the works, and shortly after our photographers captured the latter up close, Jaguar Land Rover engineers took it to the Nürburgring for rigorous testing.

Jaguar Land Rover plans to launch four all-electric Range Rover models by the end of 2026, with the Sport version expected to be the second to be launched. The prototype that was spotted looks almost identical to the internal combustion model, with the only obvious flaws being the lack of exhaust pipes and quiet operation. From a distance, most people can’t tell the difference between an electric car and a regular gasoline model.

Not much is known about the technical specifications of the electric Range Rover Sport. It is expected to use the same 800-volt electrical architecture as the full-size Range Rover EV. Performance should be more than adequate, and we expect it to easily surpass the 355 horsepower offered by the entry-level ICE Range Rover Sport. Whether it can match the 534-horsepower PHEV version or the 626-horsepower flagship SV remains to be seen, but for most customers, peak horsepower won’t be particularly important.

Like most luxury cars, most Range Rover models today are meant for cruising in the city and on the open road. As such, the electric model should appeal to those looking for comfort, quietness, refinement and plenty of power to leave Tesla YouTubers to drag racing.

Advanced traction control will also be standard on all electric Range Rover models. The system will be operated by a separate electric drive control unit, reducing torque reaction time at each wheel from around 100 milliseconds to “as little as 1 millisecond”.
Land Rover will take the wraps off the first electric Range Rover next year.
