Erie welcomes championship game and cancer health center

ERIE, Pennsylvania —A busy three-day weekend in Erie, Pennsylvania will kick off with the 74th annual VP Racing Fuels Championship at Lake Erie Raceway.

The VP Racing Fuels Championship is the second longest running stock car series in North America. The event offers drivers the opportunity to compete in one of the biggest championships of the season on the asphalt track at Lake Erie Raceway in northeastern Pennsylvania.

“We are honored to have the Championship return to Erie. It’s an intensely competitive season, so we look forward to providing exciting, fantastic racing for fans and drivers alike,” said AJ Moore, General Manager of Lake Erie Raceway. “We are excited for the opportunity to host such a large event and invite fans to experience the Championship atmosphere.”

Qualifying is scheduled for Friday at 6:15 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:15 p.m., followed by the 74th Champions 250, which will be held at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, and fans can purchase tickets at LakeErieSpeedway.com.

The Erie Biathlon in support of the Erie Cancer Wellness Center (ECWC) will also be held this weekend, starting and finishing at Pleasant Ridge Park in Fairview, Pennsylvania.

150 athletes from Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio will compete in a 5K run, a 20K bike ride and a 5K run to end the race. The course is designed to be both accessible and engaging for athletes of all abilities.

The sold-out match, scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday, is designed to support and raise funds for the ECWC, whose mission is to provide free support to cancer patients and their caregivers through services and programs that promote recovery and comfort for those affected.

Additionally, LECOM Sports Park and Erie Insurance Arena will host the Erie Bay Cup as part of the Championship Cup Series.

A total of 30 Class A and AA boys U16-U8 teams from Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio will participate, with each team playing at least four games. Games will be held from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 7 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. on Sunday.
