Europe’s best-selling car in 2024: Tesla Model Y’s astonishing performance

  • Dacia Sandero leads European sales in the first half of 2024, surpassing Tesla Model Y.
  • The Tesla Model Y slipped to eighth place in European car sales, while the Volkswagen Golf ranked second.
  • Hatchbacks and small SUVs remain the most popular car segments in Europe.

The Tesla Model Y created a sensation in Europe last year, becoming the continent’s best-selling new car. But in the first half of 2024, the Model Y has slipped down the sales rankings, falling behind a series of small cars that have been selling strongly year after year.

Sales data for the European Union and the United Kingdom show that the Dacia Sandero was the best-selling new car between January and June this year, with 143,596 units registered. The Sandero has long been one of Europe’s most popular cars, in part because of its extremely affordable starting price of just €11,500 (about $12,500 at current exchange rates).

In second place is the Volkswagen Golf. In the first half of 2024, the model sold a total of 126,993 units, surpassing the third-placed Renault Clio (sales: 114,623 units). Following closely behind is the Volkswagen T-Roc, Europe’s best-selling SUV, with 111,381 new registrations this year.

Although the Peugeot 208 surpassed the Dacia Sandero and Volkswagen T-Roc to win the sales championship in 2022, its ranking has slipped to fifth place. In the first half of the year, a total of 107,097 Peugeot 208s were registered across the European continent. Behind the 208 is another Volkswagen Group model, the Skoda Octavia, which sold a total of 102,945 units from January to June. This puts it slightly ahead of the Citroen C3 with sales of 102,304 units, enough to maintain its seventh place.

Then there’s the Tesla Model Y at number eight. This year, a total of 101,181 new Model Ys were registered in the EU and UK. While that’s down from last year, it’s still the best-selling new electric car on the market, and considering it’s significantly more expensive than the other models on this list, its sales are impressive.

Following the Model Y is the Toyota Yaris Cross, which had 99,694 new registrations, slightly ahead of the mechanically related Toyota Yaris hatchback, which has accumulated sales of 93,576 units.
