Vitic takes on the role of Formula 1 director in 2022, initially working alongside Eduardo Freitas as Michael Massi’s successor. He will assume the position full-time in 2023.
The FIA has made major changes to its race coaching team. Niels Wittich, Formula One director since 2022, has resigned with immediate effect. Rui Marques will take over as race director, starting with the upcoming Grand Prix in Las Vegas. This is the fourth change to the position since the tragic death of Charlie Whiting ahead of the 2019 Australian Grand Prix. The decision to replace Vatican comes as the FIA seeks to address ongoing concerns about consistency and decision-making in race control.
The FIA said in a statement: “The FIA can confirm that Niels Vitich has resigned as F1 race director to pursue new opportunities.

Vatican’s exit follows a pattern set by Michael Massi, who was dropped following the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton to win the title. It is unclear whether Wittich’s departure is related to any disagreements with FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem. This year several senior FIA staff resigned, fueling speculation.
