Ferrari Portofino Believes It Can Fly, Turns Out It Can't Even Swim After Missing a Turn
  • A Ferrari Portofino crashed in California after the driver missed a turn.
  • Police said the driver had been drinking before the late-night crash.
  • The Portofino sustained significant damage to its wheels, suspension and bodywork.

Despite its speed and swagger, the Ferrari Portofino was never the most coveted prancing horse in Maranello’s stable. However, true car enthusiasts can’t help but frown whenever a car is severely damaged, and that’s exactly what happened recently in California. This was no ordinary accident, however, as the sexy convertible found itself humiliated in an unlikely resting place: the shallows of Richardson Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Police revealed the driver of the Silver Portofino thought it best to keep driving after allegedly drinking. Unfortunately, the man missed a turn on Seminary Avenue, ran off the road, jumped the curb, crossed the dirt sidewalk, rolled down a grassy embankment, and then Stuck in the mud.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the accident, but the Ferrari was a total loss. The front left corner of the car appeared to have taken the brunt of the initial impact, as the wheel and hub were almost completely ripped off the car. The rear wheel on the same side was also severely damaged, and the Portofino’s body panels were also destroyed. Apparently, the car is headed straight to the scrapyard where the parts can be auctioned off.

The California Highway Patrol’s Marin division shared footage of the wreckage on Instagram, set to a hilarious tune by R. Kelly I believe I Can Fly. The local authorities were delighted with the unusual accident, but we suspect the owner didn’t find the incident all that funny.

The Instagram post did not specify what happened to the driver, but an image appeared to show someone being handcuffed and placed in a police car. A local towing company later towed the Portofino from its muddy moorings.

So a reminder to everyone: Ferraris are designed for the road, not the bay, and certainly not for impromptu drunken aerial experiments.
