  • The car has more power than the standard Ford RS200 and also includes some extra creature comforts.
  • Ford’s road-going RS200 is believed to have sold just 147 units, 20 of which were S models.
  • One of only four examples of this color, this example is a 1 owner example with less than 20,000 miles on the odometer.

If you’re a car enthusiast, you most likely don’t know that the Ford RS200 is one of the legendary cars of the Group B rallying era, but did you know that Ford also built an even more special version called the RS200 S? Only 20 of them exist, one of which will be auctioned in the UK next month.

The idea for the RS200 S came from Canadian Murray DeWert, who came up with a tweaked and more refined version of the standard car. Ford liked the idea, and these rare S models are among the final examples of the RS200. Most are painted white, but two are painted blue and two are painted black. Ford also only produced four red RS200 S models, including this one.

Like other RS200 Ss, the car’s 1.8-liter turbocharged engine has been upgraded to 350 horsepower and comes with many of the usual optional bits and pieces. These include Recaro seats with leather, high quality carpets, additional soundproofing, remote locking, alarm system, radio/cassette player and air conditioning.

Interestingly, this RS200 S was originally a left-hand drive model, but Ford itself converted the car to a right-hand drive model before the original owner took delivery. It is sold with the original LHD parts, second set of wheels, and the removed factory air conditioning system.

Iconic Auctioneers is handling the sale and notes that the car has 19,956 miles (32,116 kilometers). Owned by just one person, it has been lovingly maintained and cared for by a number of UK experts over the years.

Ford is believed to have sold only 147 road-going RS200s, despite Group B regulations requiring Ford to build 200 units. This car, number 138, is still as compelling today as it was when it first left the factory. The auction house’s guide price is £300,000 to £350,000 (approximately $380,000 to $444,000), excluding buyer’s premium and value-added tax.
