Fish falls from the sky and smashes Tesla’s windshield

  • A Tesla owner in New Jersey found a dead fish near his car’s shattered windshield.
  • The video shows the impact moment as the flounder falls from the air.
  • The fish may have been dropped by an eagle or other bird of prey.

Jeff and Cynthia Levine live in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, near the Navesink River and Sandy Hook Bay, which are home to countless fish. The Levines believe an eagle grabbed a fish from one of the bodies of water and dropped it into their Tesla. The car’s camera captured the fish’s fall, when it hit the windshield and was crushed.

“Cars started honking, this crazy honking noise we’ve never heard before, and I didn’t know how to turn it off,” Cynthia said. “When I got out, he was out in the yard somewhere, and he heard the crash and everything, but he ignored it. We were stunned, and I said to him, ‘It looks like fish scales and blood on the windshield.'” The video shows the moment of impact and the damage left behind.

How could something like this happen? The Levins are placing the blame on residents who live in their own house. “We also have an eagle’s nest in our backyard… so we think that was most likely done by an eagle,” Cynthia told NJ.com. They didn’t name the eagle, so it’s unclear if they were trying to protect its identity for fear of retaliation. Meanwhile, Jeff has a simple request for other flying creatures in the area. “I lowered my deductible so if there are any birds that hear it, please don’t drop it here because I’m insured now,” he said.

This is not the first time a fish fall has caused significant damage to property on land. In August 2023, another fish fell from the sky in New Jersey and landed on power lines, causing power outages for several hours.

Local authorities downplayed the incident, urging the public to remember the fish, whom they called Gilligan. “Gilligan was a hard-working family man. He was the father of thousands of children,” the post read. “The suspect was last seen flying south. If you see him, do not attempt to arrest him.” Similar advice may be wise for this latest fish attack on a Tesla. Many eagles are also protected by state and federal laws, so retaliation may be illegal.
