In this case, car owners can update their cars wirelessly without having to go to a dealer to fix the problem.

  • Fisker just recalled 7,745 vehicles due to a regenerative braking issue.
  • This problem mostly occurs when driving over bumpy roads.
  • The bankrupt automaker said it would fix the issue with a software update.

While Fisker may be in the midst of bankruptcy proceedings, it’s still issuing recalls, and this time it’s a little odd. The issue that triggered the recall dates back to late 2023, and it feels like the regenerative braking has temporarily stopped working.

When you let off the accelerator, the Fisker Ocean uses regenerative braking from the electric motor to slow the car down. But as the manufacturer admits, the system can pause for 740 milliseconds, or 0.74 seconds, over bumps in the road. When it pauses, it feels like the car is accelerating, but in reality, it’s just not braking that hard.

Understandably, this inconsistent feel is unwelcome to Fisker and its owners, so the company is recalling 7,745 vehicles in the U.S. and 281 in Canada. The fix is a simple software update. The updated version 2.2 software cuts what Fisker calls Drag Torque Control from 740 milliseconds to 320 milliseconds. The system still takes a brief break under braking, but it’s less than a third of a second.

The reason for the recall is that the strange braking behavior could theoretically increase the risk of a crash in situations that require precision or emergency braking. The company added that the friction brakes still work fine. Fisker is also aware of one injury related to the suspended regenerative braking issue.

All Fisker Oceans can get software version 2.2 over the air. If dealers still have unsold vehicles, they are not allowed to sell them until the vehicles have the update installed. This is an over-the-air update, which is a big win for Ocean owners who have trouble finding dealers who can still service their vehicles. If you are an owner, you can check your VIN on the NHTSA website to confirm if your vehicle is covered by the recall.
